I Thought Therapy Would Fix Us

When we started couples therapy, I lowkey thought it was just about us.

Like, how we could stop arguing.

How he could start listening.

How we could fix things.

But I wasn’t ready for how much I would see myself.

Therapy revealed some hard truths.

Like how I shut down emotionally when I feel vulnerable.

Or how I sometimes expect him to read my mind then feel abandoned when he can’t.

I realized I wasn’t always communicating to connect…

Sometimes, I was communicating to protect myself.

One of the biggest lessons?

It’s not about avoiding conflict. It’s about handling it with love and intention.

I had to learn how to express what I feel instead of what I fear.

I had to soften without losing my boundaries.

And I had to unlearn the idea that emotional safety means never being uncomfortable.

We’re still in therapy.

Some days are light, some days are raw.

But now we fight with respect.

Now we pause.

Now we reflect, not just react.

And whether we last forever or not I know for sure I’m leaving this process more in tune with me.

If you’re thinking about couples therapy or in it already know that it’s not about changing each other. It’s about understanding yourselves together.

... Read moreCouples therapy is more than just a space to resolve arguments; it’s a profound exploration of self-awareness and emotional dynamics. Many enter therapy with the goal of fixing their partner's behavior, but the real work often lies in uncovering their own patterns and responses. One common realization is the tendency to shut down during conflicts. This behavior, often rooted in vulnerability, leads to unmet needs and misunderstandings. Couples may find themselves yearning for connection while simultaneously erecting emotional barriers. It’s essential to recognize that vulnerability can coexist with a strong sense of self and healthy boundaries. In therapy, couples are encouraged to express their emotions honestly, addressing feelings of anxiety or frustration instead of placing blame. For instance, instead of saying "You never want to talk," one might share, "I feel anxious when things are left unresolved." This shift in language fosters empathy and understanding, allowing both partners to feel heard and supported. As therapy progresses, partners typically learn to catch themselves slipping into old patterns and work together to name and address these behaviors. This process is crucial because it fosters a collaborative atmosphere, where both individuals feel empowered to communicate openly and effectively. Working through these dynamics doesn’t mean avoiding discomfort; rather, it involves embracing vulnerability as a pathway to deeper intimacy. Acknowledge that discomfort can lead to growth and connection, rather than viewing it as a sign of failure Ultimately, couples therapy can serve as a transformative experience, helping partners not just to navigate their relationship but also to understand themselves better. The takeaway is clear: therapy is about understanding each other as a unit, while growing individually through shared experiences.

I never thought we would make it.
From the outside, it looked like we were still holding on… but behind closed doors, we were drifting. Two people living side by side, but slowly becoming strangers. Pride got louder. Love got quieter. And selfishness… it was sitting in the center of everything. We both wanted to be heard…
