Does trauma change your personality?

It definitely changed mine! Although, I was put into therapy, immediately, it took me awhile to open up to this stranger? But, since she was totally unbiased about me & the situations, I spilled the tea and let her have it!

3/21 Edited to

... Read moreFrom my personal experience, trauma doesn't just affect the mind temporarily—it can reshape aspects of your personality over time. Initially, I found it hard to open up to my therapist. It felt strange and uncomfortable trusting a stranger with my deepest fears and emotions. However, the unbiased perspective my therapist provided was crucial. It allowed me to explore my thoughts and feelings without judgment, which helped me understand how trauma influenced my behavior and outlook. Therapy became a safe space where I could gradually dismantle walls built by trauma. This process didn't happen overnight; it required patience and repeated sessions to get comfortable sharing my story. I discovered that trauma often leads to defense mechanisms like withdrawal or hypervigilance, which subtly change how we interact with others. Understanding these changes gave me power to work on them consciously and start reclaiming my true self. For anyone facing similar struggles, I'd suggest seeking a therapist who offers empathy and neutrality. Healing is possible and acknowledging personality shifts is a vital step toward recovery. Trauma may leave marks, but with the right support and courage to be vulnerable, you can transform and grow beyond it.
