Everything I ate at Thonburi Market in Bangkok 🦐🔥 huge prawns, salmon & sea snails!
Visiting Thonburi Market in Bangkok offers an incredible opportunity to indulge in an array of fresh and diverse seafood right from the heart of the city. One highlight that stood out during my visit was the variety of live seafood available straight from the tank, especially the blue river prawns. These prawns, priced around ฿450 per kilogram (approx. $4 AUD each), were impressively meaty and plump with a natural sweetness that paired beautifully with the tangy, spicy Thai seafood sauce. Another memorable dish was the soy-marinated crab, rich with creamy, buttery roe that melted in my mouth without any fishy aftertaste. The balance of garlic and chili in the seasoning provided a perfect contrast to the richness, enhancing the overall flavor experience. I also tried the marinated salmon, which was smooth, fatty, and soaked up the sweet and savory soy marinade, making it a repeat dish I'd happily order again. On the grilling front, the market offered sea snails cooked with garlic butter, providing a slight crunch without being overly chewy, and the grilled spotted babylons delivered a pleasant chewiness with a subtly sweet flavor—both complemented wonderfully by the spicy and tangy seafood sauce. The market even features exotic options such as horseshoe crabs and enormous river prawns almost lobster-sized. While the cheesy preparation of the giant river prawn was enjoyable, it lacked the freshness and sweetness that the live prawns delivered, so I’d recommend prioritizing live catches for the best taste and value. Finally, no visit to this seafood market would be complete without sampling the fresh sashimi, especially the fatty salmon belly, prized for its buttery texture and rich flavor. Overall, Thonburi Market is a seafood lover's paradise offering fresh, affordable, and delicious dishes. For anyone visiting Bangkok, this market promises a memorable dining experience with authentic Thai flavors and unique seafood varieties that are hard to find elsewhere.
