I've found that my ADHD mind processes auditory input during prayer not just as words or sounds, but as rhythmic patterns, melodies, poetic structures, and lyrical compositions. This sensory-rich experience often helps me connect deeply, but it can also be distracting if I’m not careful. To keep God at the center despite the constant mental activity, I’ve developed some practical strategies that might help others with ADHD: First, I create a dedicated sacred space that's free from distractions, which helps focus my mind. Using calming music or rhythmic sounds that align with my attention patterns also makes praying feel natural and engaging. I also embrace movement during prayer or meditation—like tapping my fingers or gently swaying—which helps regulate my energy levels and maintain focus. Another important aspect is allowing for flexibility. Rigid prayer routines can feel overwhelming, so I adapt by shifting the time or form of prayer to suit how I feel moment-to-moment. Lastly, I remind myself to practice patience and self-compassion. ADHD can make spiritual focus challenging, but staying gentle with myself allows the relationship with God to flourish without pressure or guilt. Sharing these experiences openly in communities like #adhdkids and #adhdwoman has been incredibly empowering. It’s comforting to know others understand the complex interplay of faith and neurodiversity, and as we support each other, we find strength in keeping God truly at the center of our lives.
