I want to become a Booktuber!

New York
2024/8/12 Edited to

... Read moreWhen I first started thinking about becoming a BookTuber, the biggest question swirling in my head wasn't even about gear – it was, 'Am I too old to do this?' I'm 34, and honestly, it felt a bit intimidating seeing all these super young, vibrant creators. But here’s the thing I quickly realized: passion for books has no age limit! If you love reading and want to share that joy, there's absolutely a place for you on BookTube, regardless of your age. In fact, a more mature perspective can be a huge asset, bringing a unique voice to the community. So, let's toss that age worry right out the window. Now, onto the practical stuff! You asked about cameras and software, and trust me, you don't need to break the bank to start. For cameras, your smartphone is probably your best friend to begin with. Modern phone cameras are incredibly powerful, and most BookTubers start right there. If you're looking to upgrade later, a simple mirrorless camera like a Sony ZV-1 or a Canon M50 Mark II are popular choices because they're great for vlogging and not too complicated. But seriously, just grab your phone and start filming! Make sure you have good lighting – natural light from a window is free and fantastic. You can even use your beautiful, packed white bookshelf, bursting with various books, as a backdrop, just like in that inspiring image, to give your videos a personal touch and show off your book love. As for editing software, there are fantastic free options to get you started. DaVinci Resolve is a professional-grade editor that offers a robust free version, which is incredible for learning. If that feels a bit daunting, apps like CapCut or InShot (on mobile) or even basic desktop editors like iMovie (for Mac users) or Shotcut (cross-platform) are super user-friendly. The key is to pick something you feel comfortable with and learn the basics: cutting, adding text, and maybe some background music. Don't aim for cinematic masterpieces from day one; focus on clear audio and coherent content. So, how do you even start? My advice is simple: just start! Don't wait for perfection. Your first few videos will probably be a bit rough, and that's totally okay. Find Your Niche: What kind of book content do you love? Reviews, hauls, read-alongs, discussions, literary analysis? Your unique perspective is what makes you, well, *you*. Plan Your First Video: Don't just hit record. Outline what you want to say. A simple 'TBR (To Be Read) pile' video or a 'Recent Reads' review is a great way to dip your toes in. Focus on Audio: People will forgive slightly less-than-perfect video quality if they can hear you clearly. Your phone's mic is fine to start, but an external lavalier mic (even an affordable one) can make a huge difference. Engage with the Community: Watch other BookTubers, leave comments, and participate in discussions. BookTube is a wonderfully supportive community, and making connections is key to growth. Be Consistent (but not rigid): Try to upload regularly, but don't burn yourself out. Whether it's once a week or once a month, find a schedule that works for you. Remember, the goal is to share your passion. Your authenticity and love for books will shine through, regardless of your equipment or editing prowess. So, take the leap, grab your favorite book, and start talking into that camera – your future BookTuber self will thank you!
