... Read moreOkay, so you've successfully cut those adorable 'spiderettes' and started rooting them! But what happens next? I've been through this a few times, and here are some extra tips I wish I knew when I first started propagating my spider plants. When to Snip Those Spiderettes (And Why!) While you can technically snip a spiderette at almost any size, I've found the best success with 'babies' that are at least 2-3 inches across and have tiny nubs of roots already forming at their base. You can usually spot these little roots even before you cut them from the mother plant. Cutting too early means the baby might not have enough energy to root independently. Always use clean, sharp scissors or pruners to make a clean cut as close to the main runner as possible, but without damaging the spiderette itself. This prevents disease and helps the baby heal quickly. Deep Dive: Water Propagation Secrets If you chose the water method (which I love because you can watch the roots grow!), here are my top tips. For successful rooting, ensure only the base of the spiderette, where the roots will emerge, is submerged in water – not the leaves! I use small glass jars or even shot glasses so I can easily see the progress of the roots. Change the water every 2-3 days to prevent bacterial growth and replenish oxygen, which is crucial for healthy root development. You’ll typically see roots forming within 1-2 weeks, but it can take up to a month for them to be substantial enough for planting. Look for roots that are at least an inch or two long before moving them to soil. They should look white and healthy, not brown or mushy. Mastering Soil Propagation Directly For those who prefer planting directly into soil, it's super convenient! I usually use a small pot (about 3-4 inches) filled with a good quality, well-draining potting mix. You can even mix in a bit of perlite for extra drainage. Gently press the base of the spiderette into the soil, ensuring the nubs are covered. Some people like to keep the spiderette attached to the mother plant for a few weeks while it roots in soil, providing it with nutrients. If you do this, make sure the small pot is right next to the mother. If you cut it off, keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Creating a mini-greenhouse effect by covering the pot with a plastic bag can really help with humidity and encourage rooting, especially in drier climates. Just remember to vent it occasionally to prevent mold. The Big Move: From Water to Soil This can be a tricky transition! After your water-rooted spiderette has developed a good root system, it’s time to move it to soil. Be gentle! The roots are very delicate. Plant it in a small pot with fresh potting mix, similar to the direct soil method. The key here is to keep the soil consistently moist for the first week or two. Water-rooted plants are used to a constant water supply, so they need time to adjust to extracting moisture from soil successfully. I often put them in a slightly shadier spot for a few days to help them acclimate without the stress of intense light. First Steps for Your New Plant Babies Once your new spider plant baby is established, whether from water or direct soil propagation, it's all about consistent care. They love bright, indirect light. Water them when the top inch or two of soil feels dry. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. You typically don't need to fertilize them until they've been in their new pot for a couple of months and are actively putting out new growth. Watching them grow from a tiny spiderette into a full, lush plant is one of the most rewarding parts of plant parenthood!
