Doing Laundry is a Spiritual State of Well-Being
So when it comes to doing laundry, I impose a rule onto myself “before I move the washer to the dryer, the dryer clothes must already be folded.” Ever notice when you do laundry that you throw everything inside the laundry bag or basket and it stays in your room for DAYS without it being touched to be folded and put away?
That was a bad habit I had and decided what are effective ways to do my laundry and get it all put away without the room looking like a hot mess or taking HOURS to sort through?
I like to call this “psychological games” that I do help me get things done around the house. Let’s dive more into what they really are.
1. Habit Stacking
This is when you attach one task to another so they naturally flow together. The rule becomes:
“Before I move the washer to the dryer, the dryer clothes must already be folded.”
So the sequence creates a built-in system:
1. Fold dryer clothes
2. Put washer clothes into dryer
3. Start next load
It turns laundry into a structured routine instead of random chores.
2. Self-Imposed Rule (Gamification)
What I am doing is also a form of gamifying a chore. I (you) create a rule or challenge for yourself:
• “The next step can’t happen until the previous one is complete.”
Your brain treats it like a small mental puzzle or challenge, which makes the task more satisfying.
3. Task Gating
Productivity experts sometimes call this task gating. One task “unlocks” the next.
Think of it like levels in a game:
• Level 1 → Fold dryer clothes
• Level 2 → Move washer clothes
• Level 3 → Start next load
One might ask, how does doing laundry tie into spirituality and wellbeing? I don’t get the correlation between the two. Let’s break it down:
🧺 Cleansing & Purification:
Across cultures, washing cloth has always symbolized purification.
Examples:
• In many traditions, clean garments represent renewal or a fresh start.
• Ritual baths or washing before prayer (seen in many religions) symbolize removing old energy.
• Sun-drying clothing historically represented light cleansing and purification.
So when you’re washing, drying, and folding, you’re literally moving items through a cycle of cleansing → renewal → restoration.
🧠 Mindfulness in Everyday Actions:
Many spiritual traditions teach that ordinary actions can become meditation.
For example:
• In Zen philosophy, even washing bowls or sweeping floors is considered a spiritual practice.
• The focus is on being fully present in the task.
When you fold clothes with a rule or structure, your brain enters a focused, calm state, similar to meditation.
🏡 Energetic Order in the Home:
Some belief systems (like Feng Shui and other energy traditions) suggest that:
• Clean spaces support clear energy flow
• Order reduces mental and emotional clutter
• Completing tasks prevents stagnant energy
The rule I imposed—nothing moves until the previous step is complete—creates energetic closure.
In a spiritual sense, it’s like saying:
“Everything in this home has its place and its moment.”
🌿 Turning Chores into Ritual:
You could even frame laundry as a small ritual:
• Washing → releasing old energy
• Drying → renewal and warmth
• Folding → restoring order
Some people quietly set an intention while doing it, such as:
• “May this home stay peaceful.”
• “I care for what supports my life.”
It transforms laundry from a chore into a grounding act of care for your home and yourself.
