This Changes How You See The Last Supper 👀
As someone who was a practicing Catholic for many years and received their sacraments, today marks the last supper for Christians around the world and their many denominations under the umbrella. I will say this upfront, I am no longer a practicing Catholic and these are my thoughts about certain things that I “interpret” to my understanding. I will add like a 😶 so you will know. I do not need anyone coming in my comments saying I am going to hell because I am not practicing anymore, blah blah blah.
🖼️ The Last Supper — What it is & why it matters:
The Last Supper is one of the most famous moments in religious history and art. It refers to the final meal that Jesus Christ shared with his disciples before his crucifixion.
✨ The Biblical Moment:
The event is described in the New Testament (Matthew 26: 17-29, Mark14: 12-25 and Luke 22:7-38). During this meal:
• Jesus predicts that one of his disciples will betray him
• That disciple is later revealed to be Judas Iscariot
• Jesus introduces what becomes Holy Communion:
• Bread → symbolizes his body
• Wine → symbolizes his blood
This moment is deeply tied to Eucharist and is commemorated during Holy Thursday.
🎨 The Famous Painting: (painting above)
When people say “The Last Supper,” they’re often referring to the iconic mural by Leonardo da Vinci.
• 📍 Located in Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy
• 🎨 Painted between 1495–1498
• 🧠 Known for:
• The emotional reactions of each disciple
• Perfect use of perspective (all lines lead to Jesus)
• The dramatic moment of betrayal being announced
🔍 Symbolism & Meaning:
• Calm vs chaos: Jesus is centered and composed, while the disciples react with shock and confusion
• Groups of three: The apostles are arranged in symbolic clusters
• Light & focus: Jesus is framed as the focal point, spiritually and visually
🧠 Why it still matters today:
The Last Supper is:
• A cornerstone of Christian belief and ritual
• One of the most studied artworks in history
• A powerful symbol of loyalty, betrayal, sacrifice, and connection
🧑🤝🧑 Who’s Who in The Last Supper:

• This is the betrayer 👉 Judas Iscariot
5. Peter – Leaning forward aggressively, holding a knife (foreshadowing 👀)
6. John – Calm, almost withdrawn, often interpreted as the youngest
🎯 Center
7. Jesus Christ – The calm focal point 👉 Jesus Christ
👉 Right-Center Group
8. Thomas – Pointing upward (later known for doubting 👀)
9. James the Greater – Arms wide, shocked and overwhelmed
10. Philip – Hands to chest like “is it me??”
👉 Far Right Group
11. Matthew – Turning, discussing intensely
12. Jude Thaddeus – Engaged in conversation, confused
13. Simon the Zealot – Calm, older, processing everything
😶 My opinion on the Painting:
1. The number 4 is represented numerous times throughout the painting. Each side of the wall there are 4 tapestries. Not only that but when Jesus is telling the disciples that one of them betrayed him, they are each broken into 4 groups of 3. This can be interpreted as the 4 seasons of spring, summer, fall and winter with the “Sun” of God in the middle.
2. The 12 apostles represents each of the zodiac signs. If we go right to left, the painting goes from dark to light. Anyone who’s into astrology and spirituality knows that the new year doesn’t start January 1st, it starts the Spring Equinox, which is in March which is the sign of Aries. So spring goes from Aries, Taurus into Gemini.
Then we have Cancer, Leo and Virgo (next three which are all facing the sun because those are the hottest months of the season).
Jesus (Sun of God is directly in the middle), we can interpret that as he is the halfway mark within the zodiac sign (the different color on each side of his body, the placement of his hands; one is up while the other is down).
Next is Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius. It is believed that the eighth seat is Judas seat. Judas was the one who betrayed Jesus at the end and was the questionable apostle. Also sidenote, all three of those apostles/ signs are all wearing blue. Coincidence?
And the final three houses are Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Out of all the apostles in the picture, Sagittarius is the only one holding what appears to be a knife. One can conclude can means shorter days and longer nights or “death” to agriculture, life and most living places around the world.
