What I wish someone told me when I started writing

There are so many songwriting accounts out there that are telling you there’s one right way to write a song in order for it to be considered a perfect song. The reality is that, whatever your song sounds like or looks like, as long as you’re happy with it — it’s perfect.

3 things I wish someone would’ve told me when I first started songwriting:

🩵 bad drafts are part of the magic of writing

🩵 your 10th attempt (or 11th, 12th, 20th) is STILL progress. And you know what else is still progress? Writing one line a day. Or even just one word.

🩵 songwriting isn’t linear — especially when you’re still figuring out your own voice as an artist. There’s going to be ups and downs and backwards’ and forwards’ and sideways and moments of complete and utter chaos, but also peace.

Save this post or send it to a friend who might need the reminder that songwriting is always supposed to be a creative outlet and you should not be putting yourself in a box 🧡

... Read moreSongwriting is a deeply personal and creative journey that often defies rigid rules or formulas. The image text highlights important themes such as "creativity," "perfection," and "this same," underscoring the message that creativity itself is unique and subjective and that perfection is a fluid concept. One key takeaway from early songwriting experiences is embracing imperfect drafts as a vital part of growth. Bad drafts are not failures but stepping stones that reveal new ideas and directions. This process aligns with expert songwriting advice emphasizing that consistent effort—even if incremental, like writing a single line or word a day—is genuine progress toward developing a distinctive voice. Songwriting rarely follows a linear path. Many writers encounter periods of intense inspiration mixed with creative blocks or uncertainty. Recognizing that ups and downs, confusion, and breakthroughs coexist during the journey encourages patience and resilience. It also helps artists avoid self-imposed limitations or harsh judgments about their work. Moreover, engaging with a supportive community can enrich the songwriting experience. Platforms like the "Creatives Club" offer opportunities for connection, inspiration, collaboration, and spotlight features, fostering a sense of belonging and motivation. Aspiring songwriters should remember to view songwriting foremost as a creative outlet—not a box to confine their artistic expression. By prioritizing personal satisfaction and authenticity over external standards of perfection, artists can unlock their most meaningful and original creations. Ultimately, this mindset nurtures continued growth and fulfillment in their craft.
