This is one of the things, along with whipped cream & cold foam, that I no longer buy from the store!
Making butter is the first thing that kickstarted my interest in making more items from home. Why waste the money?
I originally learned how to make this by shaking some heavy whipping cream in a Mason jar … I quickly realized I don’t enjoy shaking my arm off! A standard mixer has been a life saver for me.
🧈TIPS🧈
** You can make your butter salted or unsalted. I prefer salted, personally. Adding salt halfway through the whisking process is when I like to add it!
** I don’t believe you HAVE to scrape the sides, although I feel this is more effective and you will get your butter quicker by doing so.
** Recommended that you use a cover or towel to put over the bowl. Once the butter begins to separate from the buttermilk, it gets messy quick!
** Instead of an ice bath, running under the coldest water your sink can dispense works just fine. Just be sure the water runs clear before you shape and move to the fridge!
** I don’t do fun shapes with my butter, I end up throwing it into a butter container once it’s solid anyways! Butter molds are a thing, though. Which may be fun for butter pads!
... Read moreMaking homemade butter is not only rewarding, but it's also a cost-effective choice compared to store-bought options. By using just heavy whipping cream and a standard mixer, you can create rich, creamy butter in approximately 20 minutes. For those interested in the science behind butter-making, it's fascinating to know that the rhythmic action of whisking helps to break down the fat globules in the cream, leading to the formation of butter and buttermilk.
When making butter, you'll want to start with high-quality heavy cream, ideally ultra-pasteurized for the best results. Experiment with different flavors by adding herbs or spices during the whipping process, and remember that the texture can be achieved by kneading the butter after it separates from the buttermilk.
Storing your homemade butter is equally important. Wrap it tightly in parchment or wax paper to maintain freshness and consider labeling it with the date of production! This homemade delight not only enhances your meals but can also serve as a thoughtful gift for friends and family. Don't forget to save the buttermilk for other recipes, such as pancakes or biscuits, making your cooking even more efficient. Enjoy exploring the endless possibilities with your homemade butter!
