How I tackle learning as a neurodivergent woman

For the longest time, I was labeled "slow." People were frustrated by how long I took to learn new things. They didn't like the questions I asked, or how I did the task itself. They didn't want to provide me with what I needed to learn whatever it was they were teaching me.

This wasn't just isolated to teachers: my parents, friends, coworkers and managers all gave me a hard time for the amount of questions I asked.

I now know that by have written instructions, having someone show me how to do the task itself, and giving myself grace and ability to make mistakes, I can remove some of the difficulty in learning new things.

As someone who is AuDHD, do you struggle to learn new things? What do you do to accommodate yourself?

... Read moreLearning can be a unique challenge for neurodivergent individuals, particularly women who identify as AuDHD. It’s essential to develop tailored strategies that cater to one's learning style. Written instructions are fundamental; they offer a clear roadmap that can significantly ease the learning process. When faced with new tasks, watching someone else perform the task can demystify complicated instructions. This observational learning allows for a better understanding through practical demonstration. Moreover, it is crucial to foster a growth mindset that embraces mistakes as an integral part of the learning journey. Mistakes should not be viewed as failures but as opportunities for growth and understanding. By allowing oneself to make errors without the pressure of perfectionism, learning becomes a more engaged and less stressful experience. Creating a supportive environment where questions are welcomed can also enhance learning. Individuals should have the freedom to ask clarifying questions and seek additional explanations tailored to their needs. Engaging with communities, such as forums for ADHD and autism, can provide peer support and share effective strategies among neurodivergent learners. This not only empowers individuals to take control of their learning but also helps in understanding the diverse experiences within the neurodivergent community.

It's hard for me to learn new things too unless they are a special interest. If not, I need all the things you have mentioned here, especially modeling first and being given many opportunities to try it myself and ask questions. I also give myself the chance to fail. It took a while to gain that confidence.
