Managing our neurodivergent household

Accommodations is a bit of a buzz word around here. Since learning we're all AuDHD (autistic/ADHD) in my household, we've started learning about our varying needs and how we can accommodate ourselves.

These cover just a few things we do to manage overwhelm in our household, and is definitely not a definitive list. For example, we also do things like stay away from overly crowded places on weekends, have sensory items available for when we need them, and listen to each other when someone needs a break (even if its from each other ;))

What do you do to keep your neurodivergent family happy?

... Read moreManaging a neurodivergent household can be both rewarding and challenging. To create an environment that supports everyone's needs, consider implementing these effective strategies: 1. **Identify Individual Needs:** Understand the unique requirements of each family member. This may involve discussing sensory sensitivities, social preferences, and comfortable communication styles. 2. **Establish Routines:** Consistency can greatly benefit families with neurodivergent members. Develop daily routines that provide a sense of stability and predictability, helping everyone to feel more secure. 3. **Create Safe Spaces:** Designate areas in your home where family members can retreat when feeling overwhelmed. These spaces should promote calmness and allow for sensory regulation through items like noise-canceling headphones or weighted blankets. 4. **Limit Stimulation:** Be mindful of your environment by minimizing loud noises, bright lights, and crowded spaces—especially during busy times. This adjustment can help prevent sensory overload. 5. **Prioritize Family Time:** Engage in activities that encourage quality bonding and enjoyment. Encourage everyone to participate in choosing these activities, ensuring that they cater to different interests and comfort levels. 6. **Open Communication:** Foster a culture where family members feel safe to express their feelings. Encourage candid discussions about needs and emotions, promoting a supportive atmosphere. 7. **Take Breaks Together:** Schedule regular breaks—both individual and family—throughout the day. This ensures everyone has time to recharge and regroup, which can strengthen interpersonal relationships. By embracing these tips and sharing experiences with other neurodivergent families, you can create a nurturing environment that fosters growth, respect, and love.
