Autistic communication and play in children

Autistic individuals have a completely different communication style, and that even manifests in everyday play for autistic children. Some common autistic ways of playing are sorting, lining up toys, and putting things back in very specific places.

I learned very early on, that if I engaged in this type of play with my daughter (for example, putting away the Barbies in her Barbie house) instead of playing an actual game with them, she was more engaged. She does play pretend, too, but it often looks different from other kids her age.

Another component of autistic communication is the restricted interests. My daughter is very interested in animals, their habitats and various facts about them. She is always so happy when I give her space to info dump and share all of the things that are so special to her.

... Read moreWhen we talk about autistic children, it's so important to understand that their world often operates a little differently, especially when it comes to communication and play. I remember initially observing some behaviors in my child and wondering, 'Is this typical? What does this mean?' It's a journey of learning, and recognizing specific characteristics can truly help in engaging with autistic kids more effectively. One of the most defining aspects is what's often termed a 'restricted interest.' This isn't just a hobby; it's an intense, focused passion for a particular topic, object, or activity. For example, some children might become incredibly knowledgeable about trains, able to recite facts about different models, routes, or historical details. This isn't just memorization; it’s a deep dive into a subject that provides comfort, predictability, and a way to process the world. When a child is excitedly 'info-dumping' about their favorite subject, it's a profound form of communication and connection for them. Instead of seeing it as a tangent, we can view it as their unique autistic communication style, a way they share what truly matters to them. My daughter's passion for animals, their habitats, and all sorts of facts about them is a perfect example of this. It’s a joy to give her the space to share these special interests. Another pattern I've observed and learned about relates to certain repetitive behaviors. You might see a child repeatedly throwing a toy across a room, not out of malice, but perhaps for the sensory input or the predictable outcome. Similarly, humming while picking up toys, or lining them up in precise rows, are often self-regulatory behaviors, sometimes called stimming. These aren't just 'autism symptoms' to be managed; they are often ways children cope with sensory overload, manage anxiety, or simply express joy and focus. Embracing these different play styles, rather than redirecting them, can create a more inclusive and understanding environment. It’s about meeting them where they are and appreciating the purpose these actions serve for them. Then there's the nuance of eye contact. While some might interpret avoiding eye contact with others as disinterest or rudeness, for many autistic individuals, it can be physically uncomfortable or distracting, making it harder to process what's being said. It's not a lack of engagement, just a different way of attending. Learning to read other cues, like body language or listening intently, can be far more indicative of their engagement than direct eye contact. Understanding these unique traits helps us to better connect and communicate, making every interaction more meaningful.
