ADHD signs that might present more in girls

ADHD often presents differently in girls, and myself and my daughter are both great examples of this. While my daughter does have some more stereotypical ADHD traits (hyperactivitiy, impulsivity, interrupting others, lack of focus etc), she also has a lot of internalized traits as well.

When I look back to my childhood, I never remember being hyper… But I do recall being told I was lost in a daydream, or emotionally dysregulated. Things I wish clinicians were looking for in the 90s, but unfortunately, weren’t. I also had a lot of racing thoughts and mental health struggles.

Do you find this to be true of your own ADHD symptoms?

... Read moreADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) can often display distinct characteristics in girls compared to boys. Girls may exhibit internalized symptoms like daydreaming, emotional dysregulation, and perfectionism that can easily be overlooked. This can lead to challenges such as difficulty in making friends and managing emotional responses. Common traits like racing thoughts and the lingering effects of mental health struggles may also surface, complicating their experiences. Recognizing these signs early is crucial for timely interventions and supportive measures. Compared to more overt symptoms of hyperactivity found in boys, girls may internalize their experiences, leading to anxiety or depression if not addressed. Furthermore, the societal expectations placed on girls can exacerbate these conditions as they often strive to conform and maintain an outwardly calm demeanor despite underlying challenges. Therefore, raising awareness and providing education about these nuanced presentations of ADHD is essential. It not only aids in better diagnosis but also fosters a more supportive environment for girls navigating these struggles. Engaging in discussions about ADHD in diverse contexts, considering both familial and societal perspectives, further promotes understanding and advocacy for appropriate mental health resources tailored to girls' unique experiences.
