Everyone told me the baby weight would just fall off after i gave birth especially since i was breastfeeding. I gained 70 lbs so i was really hoping so. Unfortunately my body decided against that 🤣 I kept reminding myself & still do throughout the duration of this journey that I birthed a BEAUTIFUL baby boy and my body did an incredible thing. I try not to harp too hard on wanting my “old” body back because ultimately that’s exactly what it is. Old. I will never get that back but I do get to enjoy the process of reshaping my new body.
... Read moreEveryone talks about the "bounce back" after pregnancy, but my experience was far from immediate, and much more about embracing a "new" body. Like many moms, I was curious about what my "real" postpartum body would look like, and let me tell you, it’s a journey filled with surprises! Before pregnancy, I was around 180 lbs, feeling pretty content. Then came pregnancy, and I gained a significant 70 lbs – a huge change for my body.
Immediately after birth, my body felt completely foreign. The "pregnant belly" doesn't just disappear; for me, it was soft, stretched, and still very much there. I definitely noticed changes around my hips, a common concern for many new moms asking, "does giving birth widen your hips?" While bones don't literally widen, the ligaments soften, and the pelvic floor experiences significant changes, which can make your midsection feel and appear broader. It took time for my uterus to shrink, and the overall shape felt very different.
At 9 months postpartum, I was still at 250 lbs, and seeing photos of myself really highlighted how much my body had changed from my 180 lbs pre-pregnancy self. That was a big wake-up call to start actively engaging in my fitness journey, not just for aesthetics but for my overall health and well-being. I remember feeling overwhelmed, wondering if I'd ever feel strong or like myself again. Participating in events like the Mudgirl race, even when I was still at 250 lbs 1.5-2 years postpartum, was a huge step in reclaiming my body's strength and celebrating what it could do. It wasn't about the number on the scale then, but about the feeling of accomplishment and camaraderie.
The journey continued, with its ups and downs. A year after that Mudgirl race, when my son was 2.5, I was around 230 lbs. Slowly but surely, with consistent effort, I started to see changes. At the beginning of this year, I was down to 220 lbs, and more recently, taking that mirror selfie in the gym at 200 lbs felt like a huge win! It’s been 3.5 years postpartum, and I've proudly lost 50 lbs from my highest weight. This transformation wasn't a sprint; it was a marathon of self-acceptance and small, consistent steps.
This isn't just about losing weight; it's about understanding and adapting to a new body. My "old" body is gone, but this new one is strong, capable, and has achieved incredible things. For anyone wondering about how giving birth changes your body, especially if your hips widen or your belly stretches, know that you're not alone. Patience, consistency, and a lot of self-compassion are key. Find activities you enjoy, focus on nourishing your body, and celebrate every small victory. Your postpartum body is amazing, no matter its shape or size, and it's worth loving every step of the way.
I love this! I’m 16 months pp and I’m really locked in on getting comfortable in my body again. I would love to lose 60 lbs but I think the most important thing right now is to feel confident in my body and my abilities.
