Homemade applesauce that is so good

#cozyrecipes #lemon8challenge A friend from church recently gave us a lot of apples. I knew instantly I wanted to make applesauce. I was initially nervous thinking it would be out of my scope of abilities. But it was so easy!! Like way easier than I thought. And an added perk was it made my house smell amazing all day! I love that I can make this for my kids and they are not getting any added ingredients that are not good for them. Only what I put in! I will be making this often and even making some to give out as gifts. 🍎🍎🍎😋😋

... Read moreAfter making my first batch of homemade applesauce, I realized there's so much more to discover about this delightful treat! It truly felt like such a rewarding experience, and I'm excited to share some extra tips I've learned along the way. One common question I had was, 'What are the best apples for applesauce?' I've found that a mix works wonders for a balanced flavor and texture! For a sweet, smooth sauce, I often reach for Gala apples – they break down beautifully and add a lovely natural sweetness. Fuji and Honeycrisp are also fantastic choices if you prefer a sweeter profile. If you're like me and enjoy a bit more tartness or a slightly chunkier texture, adding a Granny Smith apple to your mix can really elevate the flavor. Combining sweet and tart varieties gives you a perfectly balanced homemade applesauce every single time. Don't be afraid to experiment with what's fresh and available at your local market; that's part of the fun! Since I'm always looking for healthy options for my kids, making unsweetened applesauce was a big win for me. If your chosen apples are naturally sweet enough, you might not need any added sugar at all! While some recipes, like the one I initially followed, might suggest a specific amount such as a 1/2 cup of Sugar, I usually start with much less, or even skip it entirely, especially when using very sweet varieties like Fuji. You can always taste it towards the end of cooking and add a little more to your liking if needed. A splash of Water helps everything cook down evenly without scorching, ensuring a smooth and consistent result. Remember to Whisk well as it cooks to prevent any lumps and ensure that creamy, delicious consistency we all love. You might also be wondering, 'How many apples to make applesauce?' As a general rule, about 3 pounds of fresh apples will yield roughly 4 cups of homemade applesauce. This is usually enough for a small family for a few days, or to fill a couple of small jars if you're making some to give out as gifts! It's surprising how much they cook down, so always prepare a bit more than you think you'll need. The beauty of making applesauce at home lies in its simplicity. It's essentially an 'old fashioned applesauce recipe' that requires just a few basic steps. You peel, core, and chop your apples – don't worry too much about perfect pieces, they'll all break down beautifully! Then, you combine them in a pot with a little Water to prevent sticking. As the apples soften over medium heat, they'll release their own juices. This is when the magic happens! Stir occasionally, and make sure to Whisk well once the apples are tender enough to mash, ensuring a creamy, consistent texture. Cooking until it's 'done' means it's reached your preferred consistency – some like it chunky, others super smooth. This process, often done by grandmas for generations, really connects you to the food you're eating. Beyond just plain, I've started playing with variations. A pinch of cinnamon or a tiny bit of nutmeg can add a wonderful warmth, especially if you're making it for a fall treat. For a 'berry applesauce,' you could even add a handful of fresh or frozen berries while the apples are simmering. The possibilities are endless, making it a truly versatile and customizable delight. Once your delicious homemade applesauce is done, remember to store it properly. It keeps well in an airtight container in the fridge for about a week. For longer storage, it freezes beautifully! Just portion it into freezer-safe containers or bags, and you'll have healthy snacks ready whenever you need them. It’s such a practical way to enjoy the goodness of fresh apples all year round!
