How do you not get addicted to your phone?

2025/1/26 Edited to

... Read moreIt's an increasingly common question we're all asking ourselves: "How do you not get addicted to your phone?" I found myself scrolling endlessly, feeling distracted, and missing out on real-life moments. It felt like my phone had become an extension of my hand, and honestly, it was getting a bit embarrassing, not to mention impacting my productivity and relationships. So, I decided enough was enough and embarked on my own journey to break free from mobile addiction. Here are some of the practical steps and mindset shifts that truly helped me: 1. Identify Your Triggers & Set Boundaries: For me, boredom was a huge trigger. The moment I had a spare minute, my hand instinctively reached for my phone. I started to notice when and why I was picking it up. Then, I set clear boundaries. No phone at the dinner table, no scrolling in bed an hour before sleep (this was a game-changer for my sleep quality!), and designating certain times as 'phone-free zones'. Charging my phone in another room overnight was a big one, as it removed the temptation for late-night scrolling. 2. Declutter Your Digital Space: Just like decluttering a physical room, I decluttered my phone. I deleted apps I rarely used or ones that were major time-sinks (hello, endless social media feeds!). For the essential apps, I turned off all non-essential notifications. Do I really need to know the exact moment someone liked my post? Probably not. This dramatically reduced the constant pings pulling me back to my screen. 3. Find Replacements, Not Just Restrictions: Simply saying "don't use your phone" often leads to failure. Instead, I focused on *what I would do instead*. When I felt the urge to scroll, I'd pick up a book, go for a quick walk, call a friend, or even just sit quietly and observe my surroundings. Rediscovering old hobbies like painting and gardening gave me something fulfilling to do with my hands and mind, making me less reliant on my phone for entertainment. 4. Utilize Technology to Your Advantage (Ironically!): There are great apps out there that track your screen time and can even block certain apps after you've hit a limit. Seeing those cold, hard numbers of how many hours I spent on my phone was a real wake-up call. It's like having a personal coach telling you to put it down. Some phones also have built-in 'Focus' modes or 'Digital Wellbeing' features that are incredibly helpful. 5. Practice Mindful Engagement: When I did use my phone, I tried to be more intentional. Instead of mindless scrolling, I'd ask myself, "What is my purpose for opening this app right now?" If I was looking for information, I'd get it and close the app. If I was connecting with friends, I'd focus on that interaction. This helped turn passive consumption into active engagement. Breaking phone addiction is a journey, and there will be days you slip up. The key is not to be too hard on yourself. Every small step counts. It's about slowly creating healthier habits and reclaiming your time and focus for the things that truly matter. Remember, you're not alone in asking, "How do you not get addicted to your phone?" We can all work towards a more balanced digital life. What strategies have worked for you? Ask Lemon8 and share your tips!

The best thing you can do is not reach for your phone first thing in the morning. Get up and do other things. When we make the phone the first thing we use/do we are allowing it to be the first dopamine we receive and then all day long our brain wants to chase that high so we get that urge to pick it up again and again

Addicted to Sugar? No love… just Deficient 💊
I used to think I had “no discipline” when it came to sugar… but the truth is my body was craving QUICK energy because I was running on stress, low sleep, and empty fuel. My cravings would hit like CLOCKWORK — especially at night. Like I could eat dinner, be full… and still be in the kitchen
