๐Ÿœ Tteokbokki (Korean Spicy Rice Cakes)

Tteokbokki is a super popular Korean street food made with chewy rice cakes in a sweet & spicy sauce. Itโ€™s cozy, flavorful, and actually pretty easy to make at home!

โ€ข 1 lb Korean rice cakes (tteok) โ€“ cylinder-shaped

โ€ข 3 cups water (or anchovy broth for more flavor)

โ€ข 3 tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)

โ€ข 1โ€“2 tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)

โ€ข 1 tbsp soy sauce

โ€ข 1 tsp minced garlic

โ€ข 1 tsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) โ€“ optional, for extra spice

โ€ข 1 cup fish cakes (optional but traditional)

โ€ข 1โ€“2 boiled eggs (optional)

โ€ข 1โ€“2 green onions, sliced

โ€ข 1 tsp sesame oil (optional)

1. Soak rice cakes

If theyโ€™re hard, soak them in warm water for 10โ€“15 minutes.

2. Make the sauce

In a pan, add water + gochujang + sugar + soy sauce + garlic + gochugaru. Stir well.

3. Add rice cakes

Bring to a gentle boil, then add rice cakes (and fish cakes if using).

4. Simmer

Cook on medium heat for 10โ€“15 minutes, stirring often, until the sauce thickens and rice cakes are soft and chewy.

5. Finish

Add boiled eggs, green onions, and a drizzle of sesame oil.
