Are We Supporting the Root… or Managing Symptoms?
So many people are turning to supplements like magnesium, turmeric, ashwagandha, and L-theanine to support stress, sleep, inflammation, and mood. And while they can absolutely have benefits, I think it’s important to understand what long-term daily use can look like too. 👇
Magnesium can support relaxation, sleep, muscle recovery, and bowel regularity. But in higher amounts (especially magnesium citrate), it can lead to loose stools, stomach upset, or dependency for regular bowel movements in some people.
Ashwagandha is often used for stress and cortisol support. Some people feel calmer and more balanced, but over time it may affect thyroid function in certain individuals, cause digestive discomfort, or make some people feel overly sleepy.
Turmeric is praised for inflammation support, but long-term high doses may irritate the stomach in some people and can slightly thin the blood. Because the liver processes many compounds we consume, taking concentrated herbs daily without understanding your body’s needs may place additional work on detox pathways.
L-theanine is generally well tolerated and often used for calm focus, but some people experience drowsiness or fatigue.
Here’s the bigger conversation I think we should be having: Are we layering supplement after supplement to manage symptoms, or are we asking why the body is struggling in the first place?
Sometimes stress, inflammation, energy crashes, cravings, brain fog, hormone imbalance, or digestive issues are connected to deeper things happening in the gut, microbiome, blood sugar balance, or inflammation response.
That’s one reason I personally appreciate a gut-focused system approach instead of piecing together multiple separate supplements. The system I use through Plexus focuses on supporting the microbiome, gut health, inflammation, and blood sugar balance together rather than just targeting one symptom at a time. Of course, everyone’s body is different, and what works best starts with understanding your body.
At what point do we stop adding more supplements and start asking what our body may actually be trying to tell us?
I’m curious, what’s one supplement you’ve taken consistently, and did it truly help long term… or just temporarily?
