Slowing Down: How a camera changed my travel 📸✨

(My favourite photos from the trip)

I booked a flight to Italy. 🇮🇹 Then I finally bought a camera. 📸

I’m a total beginner. I bought my Canon EOS R50 on a whim (asked ChatGPT, did a quick google search, watched some Tiktoks, clicked buy... you know how it goes). I didn’t do much research. I didn’t bring a tripod. I barely knew what ISO meant.

But I had this philosophy: It’s not the camera, it’s the photographer. I wanted to test that theory. I wanted to see if bringing a "real" camera would change the way I saw the world, or if it would just be a heavy, expensive burden in my bag.

Here is my honest, unfiltered diary of what happened when I swapped my phone for a dedicated camera on trip to Italy:

1️⃣ The Safety Anxiety was a Lie 🛡️

I spent the whole flight terrified of pickpockets. I thought walking around Rome with an $800+ device was basically painting a target on my back.

The Reality: Everyone has a camera! Once I stepped into the piazza, I realized I was just part of the "herd." In fact, my camera sling bag felt more secure on my chest than my phone did in my pocket. I blended right in.

2️⃣ The "Falling Behind" Struggle is Real 🏃‍♂️

This is the part nobody talks about. Travel photography changes the social rhythm of your trip. While I was stopping to frame a perfect shot of the Duomo, trying to get the composition right, my family was walking 20 feet ahead.

I missed conversations. I missed jokes. I found myself constantly jogging to catch up. I had to learn a hard lesson: sometimes you have to put the lens cap on to actually *be* with the people you love.

3️⃣ The "Lens Cap Dance" 🫠

Take cap off. Shoot. Hold cap. Put in pocket. Panic that I lost cap. Check pocket. Find cap. Put cap back on. Repeat 500 times a day.

It adds a layer of friction to every photo that you don't get with a phone!

4️⃣ Phone vs. Camera: The "Live Photo" Regret 📱

My phone can take "Live Photos", it captures the laughter, the movement of a dress, the sound of the street. The camera is unforgiving. If you blink, you miss it. I definitely missed some micro-moments because I was relying on that single shutter click.

BUT: Looking through the viewfinder forced me to slow down. I noticed the way the light hit the old stones during golden hour. It wasn't just a snap; it was an appreciation. 🌅

5️⃣ The Verdict 📝

My photos aren't perfect. Some are blurry because I didn't know how to shoot in the dark. My night shots are... questionable. But I have 1,000 memories that look different than anyone else's. The depth, the colors, the feeling, it’s just different.

Was it a hassle? Yes.

Was it worth it? Absolutely.

If you are on the fence about buying a camera for your next trip: Do it. Just don't forget to look up from the viewfinder every once in a while. 😉

✨ Tell me: Have you ever traveled with a dedicated camera? Or are you #TeamPhone all the way? Let me know in the comments!

... Read moreTraveling with a dedicated camera like the Canon EOS R50 offers a unique way to engage with your surroundings and enrich your travel memories, especially for beginners stepping beyond smartphone photography. One of the most enlightening experiences is how it compels you to slow down and observe the small details—the warm glow on historic stones during golden hour, the intricate shadows, and the authentic moments often overlooked in a quick snapshot. This mindfulness in photography not only improves your composition skills but also transforms your entire travel rhythm. Unlike capturing spontaneous 'Live Photos' on a phone, using a camera demands patience and planning. The 'lens cap dance' and handling equipment may seem tedious initially, but they build a ritual that encourages intentionality in every shot. Moreover, carrying a camera can shift your social interactions. While you might momentarily fall behind your travel group to find the perfect view or adjust settings, it teaches balancing your desire to document with the need to remain present and engaged with your loved ones. Safety concerns you might have are often less daunting than anticipated, as many tourists carry similar equipment, helping you blend in. For beginners, practicing night mode and understanding basics like ISO and shutter speed gradually improves your skills, turning blurry attempts into stunning memories. This hands-on learning curve fosters a deeper appreciation of photography as both art and storytelling. Ultimately, the camera becomes more than a device; it’s a tool that changes how you see the world and preserves your unique travel story, ensuring your photos carry the depth, color, and emotion that smartphone pictures sometimes miss. If you’re torn between phone and camera for your next trip, embracing a dedicated camera might just deepen your travel experience—just remember to occasionally put down the camera and enjoy the moment around you.
