POSITANO ON FILM 🎞️🍋✨

Positano

... Read moreThere's something undeniably magical about Positano, and for my latest adventure, I knew I wanted to capture its unique essence through the lens of film photography. While many opt for digital, I find that shooting on film, especially with my favorite MINOLTA camera and trusty PORTRA 400 stock, adds an incredible layer of nostalgia and a warm, authentic feel that perfectly complements the Amalfi Coast's vintage appeal. It’s not just about taking pictures; it’s about experiencing the moment more deeply. For anyone considering bringing film along to Positano, here are a few personal tips I picked up. First, light is everything here. The way the sun hits those pastel-colored cliffside houses, especially during golden hour, is breathtaking. I found that metering for the highlights usually gives you beautiful, soft shadows on Portra 400, preserving detail without blowing out the vibrant blues of the sea or the bright facades. Don't be afraid to shoot into the sun for some dreamy lens flares and silhouettes – film handles these high-contrast situations surprisingly well. Secondly, don't rush. One of the best parts about film photography is the slower, more deliberate process. Instead of snapping hundreds of photos, I took my time, composing each shot carefully. I looked for those classic Positano vignettes – a colorful ceramic vendor, a Vespa parked on a narrow street, or even just a charming chair on a balcony overlooking the sea (I was really into this chair I found!). These small details, when captured on film, suddenly feel like they're from another era. Finding cool people in cool places also adds a lot of character to your shots, capturing the true vibe of the town. Finally, embrace the unexpected. Film has its quirks, and that's part of its charm. You might get light leaks, unexpected grain, or slightly different colors than you anticipated, but often, these imperfections contribute to the unique story of your trip. Using Portra 400 specifically, I loved its versatility in different lighting conditions and its ability to render skin tones beautifully, which was perfect for capturing the relaxed, sun-kissed atmosphere. So, if you're heading to Positano and want to bring home memories that feel truly timeless, grab a roll of film – you won't regret it!
