too much going on

Sometimes my senses just get overwhelmed, and it makes me feel like I’m drowning in the noise and chaos of everyday life. There are a few things that really trigger it for me:

Loud, crowded places grocery stores, malls, or even family gatherings can feel like too much. The overlapping conversations, background music, and constant movement make it hard to think straight. When it gets to that point, I usually step outside or find a quiet corner. I focus on my breathing and remind myself I don’t have to stay longer than I need to.

Strong smells certain smells like heavy perfumes, cleaning products, or even some foods can hit me out of nowhere and instantly make me feel sick or anxious. I try to avoid those environments when I can, but if I can’t, I keep something like peppermint essential oil in my bag to ground me. It helps me reset my senses.

Bright lights, especially at work or in stores, really bother me. They make me feel tense and agitated. If I can’t dim the lights or avoid them, I’ll wear tinted glasses or blue light blockers. At home, I keep the lighting soft and warm it helps a lot.

Too many things happening at once if I’m trying to cook dinner while the TV is on, my phone’s ringing, and people are talking to me, I shut down. It’s just too much input. I’ve learned to do one thing at a time. I turn off the TV or put my phone on silent, and I try to focus on completing one task before moving to the next.

Unpredictable schedules and not knowing what’s coming next, or having last minute changes, really stresses me out. It throws off my whole mental balance. I keep a planner and try to map out my week, even if it’s not perfect. Having a visual plan helps me feel a little more in control and prepared.

I’ve learned to be more patient with myself when I feel overwhelmed. It’s not about avoiding everything, but about knowing what I need to do in those moments to protect my peace.

... Read moreIn today’s fast-paced world, sensory overload is an increasingly common issue that affects many people. Recognizing the signs of sensory overwhelm is the first step in managing it. Some individuals may experience heightened sensitivity to sound, light, or smells, which can lead to feelings of anxiety or distress. Being in crowded places or dealing with multiple stimuli simultaneously can make it challenging for one to concentrate or maintain emotional balance. To help manage sensory overload effectively, it is crucial to establish a calming routine. Techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or grounding exercises can significantly help. Incorporating sensory-friendly tools, like noise-canceling headphones or sunglasses, allows individuals to navigate overwhelming environments more comfortably. Additionally, creating a sensory-friendly space at home, filled with soothing colors and quiet areas, provides a refuge when feeling overwhelmed. Another effective method is to prioritize tasks and minimize multitasking. By focusing on one activity at a time, individuals can reduce the sensations of chaos and stay grounded. Planning one’s week ahead of time can also minimize stress related to unpredictable schedules, offering predictability amidst the noise of daily life. Proactively avoiding triggers whenever possible, while also knowing how to utilize coping strategies when unavoidable, empowers individuals to take control of their sensory experiences.

Why I Have Two Planners & Why You Should Too 😉 📕📚
In order to have a successful life, you must think about both the big picture of your life and the small details. Life can be busy, and we don’t always have time to focus on the details right away. ONE: The first planner is a bullet journal for simply a list of all the things that I need to g
