Is this an ADHD thing?

Every time I start cleaning, it never fails I’ll pick something up, put it away, then the next thing I know, I’m sitting on the couch scrolling on this app for hours. It’s like I blink and suddenly all my cleaning energy is gone. Does that happen to you too, or is that just an ADHD thing?

Lately, I’ve noticed I’ve been getting distracted a lot more easily. I didn’t really start picking up on it until I became an adult, but looking back, I’ve been this way my whole life. I’ll get super motivated to start something, but then I’ll jump to another task before I even finish the first one.

That’s why I definitely want to speak to a professional and get some real answers. Whether it’s ADHD or just a habit I’ve built over time, I think having clarity will help me understand myself better and actually do something about it.

... Read moreIt's so comforting to know I'm not alone in this! That feeling of starting a task, like finally tackling a messy room, and then suddenly finding yourself lost in thought or scrolling through social media, completely forgetting what you were doing – it's incredibly frustrating. I used to think it was just me being lazy or unmotivated, but learning that so many others experience this, especially when wondering 'what is it called when you get distracted easily?', has been a huge eye-opener. It really makes you question your personal quirks and seek deeper understanding. For me, the 'zoning out' part is particularly puzzling. It's not like I actively decide to stop cleaning; it's more like my brain just… drifts. One minute I’m picking up clothes from a chair, the next I'm staring blankly at the wall, my eyes unfocused, lost in a thought train that has nothing to do with laundry. This is often what people describe as 'ADHD zoning out,' and it feels like my brain literally hits a pause button on the current task. It's incredibly hard to snap out of it sometimes, and before I know it, an hour has passed, and those unfinished tasks are still there, mocking me. I've been trying to figure out if there are common patterns to this distraction. Does it happen more when I'm tired? Or when the task feels overwhelming? I've noticed if I break down cleaning into tiny, manageable steps (like 'just clear this one surface' instead of 'clean the whole bedroom'), I have a slightly better chance of not getting derailed. But even then, the pull to get sidetracked is strong. Sometimes I wonder if it's a way my brain tries to avoid less engaging tasks, seeking out novelty or instant gratification instead. Beyond ADHD, I've also heard terms like 'executive dysfunction' being thrown around to describe challenges with planning, organizing, and staying focused. It's not necessarily a diagnosis itself, but it highlights a set of difficulties that many people, including those with ADHD, experience. Understanding these different facets helps me frame my own struggles, moving away from self-blame towards a more compassionate view. It's not just 'me being bad at cleaning,' it's potentially a genuine cognitive hurdle. One thing I've found helpful, even before talking to a professional, is to acknowledge these moments without judgment. When I catch myself zoning out or getting distracted, instead of immediately feeling guilty, I try to gently redirect myself. Setting a timer for short bursts of focused work (the 'pomodoro technique' has been a lifesaver for some!) or simply labeling items to put away can make a difference. And honestly, just sharing my experience, like I'm doing here, helps me feel less isolated. Hearing others say, 'Yes, that happens to me too!' is invaluable on this journey to figuring myself out. It's all part of seeking the clarity I mentioned in my original post – whether it's ADHD or just my unique way of processing the world, knowing is the first step to managing it better.
