Adulthood changed how I understand my family

I used to think my parents were SO strict.

Growing up in an Asian household, it felt like there were rules for everything. I thought they were being overly controlling. But now? I see the world for what it really is: unpredictable, sometimes dangerous and honestly, I’d probably parent the same way knowing what I know now.

I also didn’t realize how young they were.

My parents had me in their early 20s, an age where I could barely take care of myself, let alone raise a child. It’s only now that I understand the kind of sacrifices they made. They were just two young adults figuring out life, while trying to raise a whole human. That realization hits different now that I’m in my 30’s (with no kids)

I used to believe my parents had all the answers.

As a kid, they felt like superheroes, the ones who knew everything, could fix anything. But now that I’m juggling bills, a mortgage, and the messiness of adult life, I understand: none of us have it all figured out. We’re all just doing our best, and that’s enough.

Then there’s the emotional stuff, the unspoken generational patterns.

We didn’t really talk about feelings in my family. As an adult, I see how that’s shaped the way I handle emotions. It’s something I’m actively working through now, so I don’t pass it on to my future kids. Healing isn’t easy, but awareness is the first step.

Adulthood hasn’t just changed how I see my parents, it’s deepened my empathy for them. We’re all just humans, learning as we go.

... Read moreIt’s funny how adulthood shines a new light on everything, especially our family relationships. When I first started grappling with what felt like an 'independent but distant relationship dynamic' with my own parents, it was a confusing mix of emotions. I recognized my deep love and respect for them, yet there was always this unspoken barrier, a certain emotional distance that made true intimacy feel elusive. I think part of it stems from what I mentioned earlier – growing up with parents who were incredibly strict but also very young when they had me. They were figuring out life themselves, making huge sacrifices to keep us afloat, and perhaps they didn't have the emotional tools or bandwidth to foster a different kind of connection. It's not a blame game, but a realization that they did their best with what they had, and their focus was often on survival and providing, not necessarily emotional nurturing or open communication. This often leads to a dynamic where everyone in the family is highly self-reliant and independent, but emotional vulnerability is rare, creating that 'distance.' Over time, I started to see my parents differently now. I realized they didn't have all the answers any more than I do now. That independence, which I once resented as distance, was perhaps their way of teaching resilience. But it also meant we rarely discussed feelings openly, leading to those ingrained emotional patterns I'm now working through. Trying to bridge this gap as an adult requires a lot of introspection and effort. For me, it’s meant accepting that my parents’ capacity for emotional expression might always be different from what I ideally want, and that's okay. It’s about meeting them where they are while also protecting my own emotional space. It’s about setting healthy boundaries, not to create more distance, but to define a respectful space where both independence and connection can coexist. This might mean limiting certain topics of conversation or choosing how often to connect, ensuring that these interactions are fulfilling rather than draining. Finding ways to connect that feel authentic for our specific dynamic has been key. Instead of pushing for deep heart-to-hearts if they're uncomfortable, I've found joy in shared activities, quiet moments, or practical help. Sometimes, simply acknowledging their past sacrifices and expressing gratitude, even for their strictness which came from a place of protection, can create a powerful, albeit different, form of closeness. This might look like sharing updates about my independent adult life, showing them the fruits of their early efforts, and allowing them to take pride in my self-sufficiency. It’s not about changing who they are, but changing my expectations and finding new ways to appreciate the unique bond we share. It’s a journey of continuous understanding, learning to value the independence within our family, and finding warmth in moments that might not fit a conventional definition of 'close.' Ultimately, navigating an independent but distant relationship dynamic is about redefining what 'close' means to you and your family, and finding peace in that unique connection.

Adulthood really does shift perspective. You start seeing your family as people with flaws and patterns, not just roles, and that understanding can be both eye opening and heavy.
