The initial Honeymoon Phase is exhilarating—you’re surrounded by new sights, sounds, and tastes that feel thrilling and novel. I remember taking countless photos and marveling at everything around me without a care. However, that excitement often fades swiftly into the Frustration Phase. For me, the language barriers and subtle cultural nuances were overwhelming. Simple tasks became frustrating challenges, and feelings of homesickness crept in unexpectedly. What helped me transition out of this phase was patience and openness. Gradually, as I entered the Adjustment Phase, I began to learn the local routines and started finding favorite eateries and hangout spots. It felt comforting to establish some familiarity—it made the culture feel less alien and more approachable. Making local friends during the Adaptation Phase was a huge turning point. Learning to appreciate the humor, habits, and local customs boosted my confidence immensely. I stopped feeling like an outsider and started truly enjoying my new environment. By the time I reached the Acceptance Phase, I felt truly at home. It’s a beautiful place to be where you embrace both your original and host cultures, creating your unique blend of identity. This stage represents not just acceptance but growth—acknowledging how much the journey has shaped you. For anyone moving abroad or studying overseas, acknowledging these stages can make the emotional rollercoaster feel less daunting. Using resources like COLLABIL, which offers tailored support such as accommodation help, community connections, and checklists, can also make adjusting much easier. Remember, it’s okay to feel overwhelmed at times; culture shock comes in waves, but with time, it leads to a richer, more fulfilling experience.
