Now AI needs to eat.
OpenAI officially began testing the display of ads in ChatGPT after announcing its plans in early January 2026. The first phase will be limited to users in the United States who subscribe to the Free and Go packages. Users of paid packages like Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education will remain ad-free.
.
The ads are clearly separated from the AI answers in the "Sponsored" sign format and are not inserted in the answer content. OpenAI confirms that the ads will have no effect on ChatGPT responses and will not share dialogue, Memories or personal information with advertisers. Advertisers will only have access to combined statistical information such as the number of impressions or clicks.
.
Initial launch advertising is based on the context of the conversation and behavior. For example, if a user asks for a cooking idea, they may see a food ordering service advertisement or order raw materials. The advertisement will only show logged-in and adult users and will not appear on sensitive topics such as health, mental health or politics. Users can also close certain advertisements and send comments back to OpenAI, including the Opt-out option, but will exchange for a reduced daily free-to-use quota.
.
OpenAI states that bringing in advertising is part of monetization, to support high infrastructure costs, and is considered a test to improve the long-term user experience, among revenue growth goals and future capital market entry plans.
