Habits I Use When I Struggle to Study!

It took me way too long to realize my study habits were kinda... useless 😅. I’d reread my notes a million times, highlight everything like it was all important, and still freeze up on tests. I couldn’t explain a single concept without looking at my paper. What actually helped? Active recall. Forcing myself to answer questions from memory or brain-dump everything onto a blank page. It felt super awkward at first because I could see what I didn’t know, but that’s what made it work. It helped me zone in on what needed work and made every study session count.

Another big shift I made was starting things earlier. Even if I just opened the doc and typed one sentence or threw together a messy outline, it totally broke that mental wall. It made finishing stuff way easier and way less stressful. Oh, and reviewing material the same day I learned it? Game changer. Just ten minutes going over key points helped me remember so much more a week later. These three habits (active recall, early starts, and quick reviews) saved my sanity. Wish I’d figured them out sooner 🫶📚

... Read moreActive recall is widely recognized as one of the most effective study techniques because it actively engages your memory by forcing you to retrieve information without looking at your notes. This method strengthens neural pathways, making it easier to recall information during exams. Besides simple quizzing, brain-dumping—writing everything you remember on a blank page—is a useful active recall strategy that highlights your knowledge gaps and guides your subsequent study focus. Starting assignments early, even by just opening the document or jotting down a rough outline, helps to overcome procrastination and mental barriers. This small initial step reduces anxiety and makes the overall task feel more manageable, enhancing productivity and reducing last-minute stress. Reviewing material shortly after learning it—such as spending ten minutes revisiting key points the same day—is crucial for transferring information from short-term to long-term memory. Spaced repetition techniques complement this by scheduling reviews over increasing intervals to further boost retention. Together, these habits form a powerful approach to studying that improves understanding and performance. Implementing active recall, early task initiation, and prompt reviews can greatly enhance learning efficiency, reduce burnout, and foster confidence. Students who integrate these methods often find themselves better prepared for exams and more in control of their study schedules.
