I Had to Move 5 Times While in College!!

Okay when I tell you I had no idea how much moving would become a part of my college experience… I mean it 😭 I didn’t live in dorms or student housing, I was married and living off-campus from the very beginning, which added a whole different layer to college life.

I started my degree living in a cute little condo with my husband. It was close to home and close to campus, which was perfect for commuting to class. But eventually, we decided to sell it and move across the city to live in a nicer area that was closer to family. It felt like the right move at the time, even though it meant longer drives to school.

After that, we went through a few rough housing situations that just did not work out 😅 We moved around a couple more times trying to find the right fit. Sometimes the place was too small, sometimes the neighborhood wasn’t right, sometimes it just didn’t feel like home.

Eventually, we found a really nice house again and it finally felt like we had some stability. But of course, life had other plans! Now that I’m in my last year of school and my husband has officially graduated (yay!), he’s heading off to Navy Officer School soon. So we packed up once again and moved states to live with his mom while we transition into this next part of our lives.

It’s been a rollercoaster, but moving this many times taught me how to be adaptable and keep going no matter what. My college journey hasn’t been traditional at all, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything 💛 Let me know in the comments if you’ve had to move around a lot during school too!

... Read moreIt sounds like my college experience wasn't the only one filled with unexpected moves! Having navigated multiple housing changes myself, I totally get how much of a rollercoaster it can be, especially when you're balancing studies, a social life, and maybe even a job. When you're a student, stability feels like a luxury, but life often throws curveballs that require us to pack up and start fresh. I remember one semester, seeing moving boxes stacked to the ceiling right before midterms felt like an impossible task. It’s not just the physical labor; it’s the mental drain of disrupting your routine precisely when you need to be focused. One time, after a quick decision to move, I walked into an empty apartment with just wood-look flooring and pristine white kitchen cabinets. It looked beautiful, but it was also incredibly daunting. You want to make it feel like home quickly, especially when you need to focus on assignments. I learned that prioritizing setting up my study space first, even if it meant living out of moving boxes for a few extra days, was crucial for academic success. And if you have a furry friend, like my own super chill pup who looked just like the one I saw peacefully sleeping in a car seat with his favorite toy and blue bowl, you know coordinating their comfort during a move is key. Keeping them calm with familiar blankets and sticking to their routine as much as possible helps a lot. It’s an added layer of planning, but totally worth it for their well-being. My biggest takeaway from all the moving? Organization is your absolute best friend. Labeling moving boxes meticulously saves so much stress. Knowing exactly which box has your textbooks versus your kitchen essentials makes unpacking a breeze, even when you're overwhelmed. Plus, each move was also an opportunity to declutter. Why haul things you don't need? I became ruthless about getting rid of unused items. This also made the next empty apartment feel less cluttered from the start, and it’s a great way to simplify student life. Budgeting is another huge factor. Moving isn't cheap! Factor in deposits, utility transfers, and actual moving costs, whether it’s hiring movers or just buying pizza for friends. This is crucial for college students on a budget. I learned to always have a 'moving fund' just in case. As the original story mentioned, sometimes a place just doesn't feel right. I've been there. Don't be afraid to keep looking for a neighborhood or a space that genuinely supports your wellbeing and studies. Whether it's having a quiet corner for your black backpack and laptop, or enough space for an island in the kitchen to spread out your notes, these details truly matter for productivity and peace of mind. Moving to new areas, even just across town, also means finding new local spots – a new coffee shop, a new grocery store, a new park for your pet. Building a new routine helps immensely. It’s not just about the four walls; it’s about integrating into the environment around them. Ultimately, each move, no matter how stressful, built resilience. It taught me that home isn't just a physical place, but a feeling you carry with you. And that unexpected changes are just part of the adventure of student life. If you're going through similar housing changes, know you're not alone, and you'll come out stronger and more adaptable on the other side!
