I swear... every time I fall down another women's health rabbit hole, I end up asking myself the same question:

How much did patriarchal ideas shape the science we have today?

For example: For centuries, women were taught that menstrual blood was dirty, impure, disgusting and something to hide.

…only for researchers to now be studying that same menstrual blood as a way to diagnose diseases like endometriosis and adenomyosis without surgery detect, diseases HPV and cervical cancer, and even develop stem cell therapies for regenerative medicine and tissue repair.

Like... are you kidding me?? The irony is almost too perfect.

For generations, women were told to hide their tampons on the way to the bathroom, whisper about their periods, wrap their pads in toilet paper so nobody would know they existed, and pretend menstruation was this embarrassing thing that should stay completely out of sight.

researchers in this field have literally talked about the fact that menstrual stigma has made this kind of research harder to fund and harder to take seriously… which doesn’t surprise me in the slightest.

If a society spends centuries treating something as disgusting, dirty and impure, it shouldn't surprise us when fewer people are interested in studying it.

Research priorities don't exist in a vacuum. Investors, institutions, funding bodies and scientists are all influenced by the culture they live in and historically, those spaces have overwhelmingly been led by men.

Am I saying menstrual stigma is the *only* reason this research is still emerging? No, not at all!

But I do think it's worth asking whether we would be further ahead if menstrual blood had been treated as a biological resource instead of a biological inconvenience 🤷‍♀️

7/21 Edited to

... Read moreReflecting on the deep-rooted stigma surrounding menstrual blood, it's eye-opening to see how cultural biases have shaped medical research priorities for centuries. From personal experience and conversations with peers, many women recall the secrecy and shame taught about menstruation — a natural biological process. This societal conditioning doesn’t just affect individual perceptions but also influences which scientific topics gain attention and funding. Recently, I learned about groundbreaking research utilizing menstrual fluid as a diagnostic tool for conditions like endometriosis—a notoriously difficult disease to detect without invasive methods. This approach could revolutionize women's health by offering less painful, earlier diagnosis options. Furthermore, the presence of stem cells in menstrual blood opens fascinating doors for regenerative medicine, potentially aiding tissue repair and chronic disease treatments. It's frustrating yet compelling to consider how much earlier these advances might have come if menstrual blood had been viewed as a valuable biological resource rather than something shameful to conceal. Researchers have noted that menstrual stigma has hindered both funding opportunities and scientific interest, which serves as a stark reminder of how cultural norms continue to shape research agendas today. As someone passionate about women’s health education, I believe openly discussing menstruation and challenging outdated taboos is critical — not only to empower individuals but also to drive scientific progress. Encouraging a culture that values and funds research on all aspects of women’s biology can lead to transformative healthcare improvements for generations to come.
