Hey everyone! I shared my ingredients for my favorite Hambeens 15 Bean Soup, and now I want to dive a little deeper into how I bring this ultimate comfort food to life. Trust me, it’s easier than you think, and the result is a rich, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying meal that’s perfect for any day of the week. First things first, let's talk about those beans! The 15 bean soup pack usually requires some pre-soaking. What I do is rinse the beans thoroughly, then sort through them to remove any small stones or debris (it happens!). After that, I either do an overnight soak (about 8 hours) or a quick soak method. For the quick soak, I bring the beans to a boil in plenty of water, let them boil for 2 minutes, then remove them from the heat, cover, and let them sit for an hour. This step is crucial for even cooking and helps make them more digestible. Don't forget to drain and rinse them again before you start cooking! Now, for the magic that makes this Hambeens 15 Bean Soup so special: the ham bone. Seriously, don't throw those ham bones out after a holiday meal! They infuse the soup with an incredible smoky depth that you just can't get any other way. If you don't have a ham bone, smoked turkey wings or even a smoked hock work wonders too. I start by sautéing my diced green bell pepper, yellow onion, and celery in a little olive oil right in my big pot. Getting a good caramelization on these aromatics builds a fantastic flavor base for your Hambeens 15 bean soup. Once the veggies are softened, I add in my pre-soaked and rinsed 15 bean mix, along with the ham bone or smoked meat. Then, I pour in enough water or chicken broth to cover everything by a few inches – typically around 8-10 cups. This is also when I toss in the stewed or diced tomatoes, chicken bouillon, bay leaves (if I'm using them), and a generous dash of all-purpose seasoning and Cajun seasoning. I bring it all to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer, cover, and let it cook low and slow. This can take anywhere from 2 to 3 hours, or even longer, depending on how old your beans are and how soft you like them. I check periodically, stirring and adding more liquid if needed. The goal is for the beans to be tender and creamy. Towards the end of the cooking time, I remove the ham bone, pull off any edible meat, shred it, and add it back into the Hambeens 15 bean soup. This is when I taste and adjust my salt and pepper. Sometimes, I'll even add a splash of hot sauce or a pinch of red pepper flakes for an extra kick! For an even thicker, creamier soup, you can mash a portion of the beans against the side of the pot with a spoon or an immersion blender. Serve this hearty soup with a side of cornbread or crusty bread for a complete, soul-warming meal. It's truly a dish that brings comfort to the table every time!
