UC BERKELEY GRAD PHOTO LOCATIONS
UC Berkeley Grad Photo Locations š„³āØš
Berkeley!!!! Okay you have a beautiful campus and honestly. In my personal opinion, everywhere is a photo opportunity no matter where we go. Berkeley has the perfect combination of buildings/nature locations and just places that are very historic to this campus.
Anytime I travel to Berkeley Iām truly amazed of how beautiful this campus really is. Iām so fortunate to capture my first generation grads who are in the BIPOC community! We truly doing thatš„³š¤
I have made a mini tip since I placed SO many locations on this location guide that I thought it be easier to share tips for my Berkeley grads.
š: SATHER GATE TIPS: okay this place is chaos (lol) in late April. Early May. Where lowkey everyone loses their mind&some people lose respect š This is a shared space and so many people(grads&photographers) are graduating that everyone deserve their moment! I recommend saving this place for either first/last shoot location for your photos!
šDoe Library: I always say this is my favorite spot on campus because truly any or every angle you get is the SHOT. This building is just so beautiful I canāt get enough from it. I feel like Iāve captured this building at different times and I absolutely love the outcome. But, the cons are that itās insanely busy in late April& May. I always lose my mind here but making it work! Like assertiveness in this location is important and Iām your girlš«” (last year a couple people tried to cut me and my grads) but politely, no thank you itās our turnššāØāØ
šHearst Mining Circle Building: okay THIS PLACE WOW. Itās honestly probably my second or maybe even my favorite I canāt make up my mind. This place is absolutely incredible with the colors/lighting/architecture ERRYTHANG. Idk I just love it. The stairs are incredible and honestly this is possibly one of the only places on campus I havenāt had an issue doing photos! I loveeeeee herrrr!
šCampanile: this place is beautiful regardless where you shoot it from itās always a vibe and a pivotal place in Berkeley. Isnāt it called the heart of Berkeley? I know I mispronounce it everytimeš

Okay, so youāve got your heart set on those perfect UC Berkeley grad photos ā youāve probably already scouted out spots like Doe Library or the Campanile. But letās talk about something equally crucial for those iconic shots: your graduation regalia! I remember feeling a little lost about all the options, especially with my UC Berkeley stole and gown. So, let me share some tips from my own experience to make sure your cap and gown look absolutely picture-perfect. First off, your UC Berkeley cap and gown. This is your official academic dress, and getting it right is key. Most students will get theirs through the Cal Student Store or ASUC Student Union during graduation season. Make sure to try it on beforehand! You don't want any last-minute surprises. Gowns can wrinkle easily, so a quick steam or iron (on a low setting!) before your photo session is a lifesaver. Trust me, a crisp gown makes all the difference in photos, especially when you're posing confidently on the steps of Doe Library or in front of the Hearst Mining Building. And for your cap, make sure it fits snugly but comfortably. The tassel usually starts on the right and moves to the left after your degree is conferred, but for photos, you can choose what feels right for the shot. Now, let's talk about the star of the show for many of us: the stole! The UC Berkeley stole is more than just a piece of fabric; itās a symbol of your achievements, heritage, or affiliations. Youāll see a variety of beautiful stoles around campus ā from the classic blue and gold stoles representing the university itself, to vibrant cultural stoles, and honor stoles or cords (like those often seen on graduates with white or specific colored stoles). I personally loved seeing how graduates incorporated their unique stoles, like the blue/gold stole or even a white stole, into their poses, proudly displaying their journey. When choosing your stole, think about what you want to represent. Many departments offer stoles, and cultural organizations have incredibly meaningful ones. Make sure your stole is neatly draped and visible in your photos. Sometimes, a small piece of fashion tape can help keep it perfectly in place, especially if youāre doing dynamic poses like a cap toss near the Campanile. The OCR mentioned a "graduate in a white dress and blue/gold stole" and other specific stoles, showing just how diverse and personalized these symbols are. Finally, when you're planning your UC Berkeley graduation pictures, remember to incorporate your regalia naturally. Don't just wear it, showcase it! Hold your diploma proudly with your gown flowing, or get a close-up of your beautiful stole. Having a cap and gown that fits well and is wrinkle-free will make you feel more confident, and that confidence will shine through in every single photo. Whether you're standing by Sather Gate, exploring the grand doorways of the library, or celebrating on the steps of the Hearst Mining Building, your regalia is a huge part of telling your Berkeley story. So, prepare it well, wear it proudly, and get ready to capture those incredible memories!
