Stay Vigilant When Traveling Abroad!

Medellín, Colombia is a big city with a population of 4.1 million if you include the neighboring cities that make up the greater metropolitan area.

If you exclude the other municipalities that make up the metropolitan area and just focus on the population within the city limits of Medellín, there are 2.6 million people. This makes Medellín about the same size of Chicago, the 3rd biggest city in the U.S. with a population of 2.7 million.

In terms of density, Medellin is 147 sq miles. Chicago is 234 sq miles. Medellín being nearly half the size of Chicago with an equal number of habitants means it is much more densely populated than Chicago.

Chicago reported 709 homicides in 2022. Medellín reported 392 homicides in 2022.

Houston is the 4th largest city in the U.S. with a population of 2.3 million people. Houston reported 435 homicides in 2022.

Medellín is no different than any other big city in the Americas when you break down the statistics.

The best way to stay safe in Medellín is to avoid making yourself an easy mark.

Smart criminals look for easy targets. They don't seek out a challenge. They don’t want to do any guesswork. They want to go after targets that they know have valuables. If you look highly inebriated, you open yourself up to be a target. If you wear jewelry, you are inviting danger. If you choose to walk down dimly lit streets alone late at night, you’re making things easier for the criminals that are out hunting for easy prey.

Anything can happen at any given moment. There’s no fail-safe plan to avoid getting robbed, but there are things you can do to lessen the likelihood of it happening to you.

... Read moreWhen traveling to Medellín, understanding the local environment is crucial. With a bustling urban life, Medellín offers many attractions, but it also comes with challenges. It's important to stay aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded areas and public transportation. Crime statistics show varied incidents in urban settings; however, many travelers report safe experiences when practicing caution. Keep your valuables discreet, avoid flashy jewelry, and steer clear of quiet streets, especially at night. Engage with local customs and seek advice from residents or experienced travelers. Join forums or travel groups to connect with others who share safety tips and insights about the city.
