5 ways I stay on top of my studies while abroad

Here’s how I stay on top of my studies while soaking up every moment of life abroad. I feel like we often forget about the “study” part when it comes to studying abroad, but it’s so important to take advantage of the education you’re getting abroad and staying consistent with assignments and readings, even while traveling. Let me know if you want more tips! #lemon8partner #lemon8college #studywithme #studyabroad #studytips

... Read moreWhen I decided to study abroad, I was so excited about exploring new places and meeting new people that I almost forgot I'd still have classes and assignments! It's such a common thing, but trust me, staying on top of your studies is totally doable while having the adventure of a lifetime. Here’s what truly helped me thrive: 1. Master Your Schedule with Time Management Tools One of the biggest game-changers for me was utilizing digital tools. I swore by Google Calendar for mapping out my classes, study blocks, and even social events. It’s so easy to color-code everything and set reminders. For larger projects or tracking assignments, Notion became my best friend. You can create lists, databases, and even Kanban boards to visually manage your workload. If you prefer something simpler, Trello is fantastic for breaking down tasks into manageable cards. Seriously, a well-organized schedule frees up so much mental space, allowing you to actually enjoy your free time without guilt. 2. Don't Skip Class – Engage and Participate! It might sound obvious, but with so many exciting distractions, it's tempting to skip a lecture or two. Don't! Attending class and actively participating in discussions not only helps you understand the material better but also builds a good rapport with your professors. I found that showing up and asking questions made the content stick, meaning less cramming later. Plus, sometimes professors share valuable insights about the local culture or even fun weekend activity ideas! It also makes it easier to approach them later if you need help with an assignment or an extension. 3. Find Your Perfect Study Sanctuary Just like at home, having a dedicated place to focus is crucial. My first few weeks abroad, I tried studying in my dorm room, but there were too many distractions. I soon discovered the local university libraries were incredible – often beautiful, quiet, and full of resources. Coffee shops were another favorite; the gentle buzz of activity actually helped me concentrate, and a good cup of coffee was a bonus! Sometimes, even a quiet corner in a park with my headphones on did the trick. Experiment to find where you're most productive and make it your go-to spot. 4. Artfully Balance Academics and Social Life This is where the magic happens! It’s all about integrating your studies into your new lifestyle. For instance, I used my travel time wisely. Long train rides to another city or flights between countries became perfect opportunities for reading assigned chapters or reviewing notes. Instead of scrolling on my phone, I’d pull out my textbook. This way, when I arrived at my destination, I could fully immerse myself in exploring without worrying about schoolwork hanging over my head. It’s about being smart with your downtime, not sacrificing your fun. 5. Connect with Professors and Academic Advisors Don't be afraid to reach out! Your professors and academic advisors are there to support you, especially when you're navigating a new academic system. I made it a point to introduce myself early on. This made it much easier to ask for clarification on assignments, discuss upcoming deadlines, or even just get advice on local resources. They can also be a fantastic resource for understanding cultural nuances in academic expectations. Building these connections can be incredibly beneficial, not just for your grades but for your overall experience abroad.
