Should I Still Go?

My best friend invited me months ago to Mexico with her and her family. I’ve been so excited—passport ready, outfits bought, time off work.

She recently broke up with her super controlling bf (name-calling, constant accusations, picking fights). I thought it was finally over… but today she told me they’re back together AND he’s coming with us.

Now I know I’m going to spend this trip third-wheeling and dealing with drama instead of relaxing. I wanted to explore and have fun, but he won’t let her do anything.

We leave in two days and I don’t want to cancel, but I’m so upset. How would you handle this?

... Read moreTravel plans can be unexpectedly complicated when interpersonal conflicts arise, especially involving controlling behavior. In situations like this, understanding the dynamics of a controlling boyfriend—who may use name-calling, constant accusations, and picking fights—is essential for protecting your well-being during the vacation. Third-wheeling on a trip can cause feelings of discomfort and resentment, especially if one person restricts the other's freedom, impacting the entire group's experience. When facing such challenges, communication is key. Consider discussing your concerns openly with your best friend before the trip to set boundaries and explore ways to enjoy the vacation while minimizing drama. It may also help to plan some activities separately or create opportunities where you can enjoy exploring freely, reducing the impact of the controlling influence. If you decide to proceed with the trip despite your worries, preparation can help. Research destinations and create an itinerary that encourages group and solo activities so you can find moments of relaxation. Additionally, be mindful of your emotional health—practice stress management techniques and try to stay neutral in conflicts to preserve your vacation quality. Finally, weigh your reasons for attending versus cancelling the trip. Sometimes preserving a friendship and creating happy memories outweigh temporary discomfort, but your mental health should always be a priority. Seeking advice from support forums, like #AskLemon8 and #FriendshipDrama, can provide further guidance and community support as you navigate this complex scenario.

I just wouldn’t do everything with them. Enjoy it to its fullest. Plan a few like meetups like meals or something. I would also have a conversation with your friend before you go to make sure you’re on the same page and that she doesn’t expect you to third wheel.
