Gospel for today: Matthew 14:22-36
Gospel for today according to Saint Matthew
Matthew 14:22-36
Jesus made the disciples get into a boat
and precede him to the other side of the sea,
while he dismissed the crowds.
After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.
When it was evening he was there alone.
Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore,
was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it.
During the fourth watch of the night,
he came toward them, walking on the sea.
When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified.
“It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear.
At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
Peter said to him in reply,
“Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”
He said, “Come.”
Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.
But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened;
and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him,
and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
After they got into the boat, the wind died down.
Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying,
“Truly, you are the Son of God.”
After making the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret.
When the men of that place recognized him,
they sent word to all the surrounding country.
People brought to him all those who were sick
and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak,
and as many as touched it were healed.

The passage Matthew 14:22-36 captures a profound moment of faith and divine intervention in the New Testament. After feeding the five thousand, Jesus sends his disciples ahead by boat while he retreats to pray alone on a mountain. As night falls, their boat faces turbulent waves driven by strong winds. It is during the fourth watch of the night that Jesus approaches, walking on the sea, demonstrating his authority over nature. The disciples’ initial terror, mistaking him for a ghost, highlights human fear in the face of the supernatural. Jesus’ reassurance—"Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid"—encourages believers to trust in his presence even amid life's storms. Peter’s request to walk on water underscores the importance of faith and obedience. His momentary doubt, caused by the strong winds, leads to sinking, yet Jesus immediately reaches out to save him, emphasizing that faith must steadily overcome fear. This passage also reflects themes found in the OCR content, such as the disciples struggling against the waves and Jesus’ call not to be afraid. The dialogue between Jesus and Peter is pivotal for spiritual teaching—"O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"—reminding readers of the need for steadfast trust in God. After calming the sea and returning to the boat, the disciples worship Jesus, recognizing him as the Son of God. Their worship signals a deepening understanding of Jesus’ divine identity and power. The landing at Gennesaret leads to healing miracles as people seek even to touch the tassel of Jesus’ cloak, illustrating faith’s healing power. For today’s readers, this scripture inspires courage in adversity, the importance of prayer (as Jesus prayed alone before the miracle), and a reminder that faith must be more powerful than doubt. It also connects to the wider biblical narrative of God’s sovereignty and love. By reflecting on this passage, believers can find reassurance that God is present in life’s challenges and able to bring healing to body and soul. This passage continues to be a foundational scripture for Christian faith communities, inspiring devotion, trust, and the spreading of the Gospel message, just as the hashtags #FaithInAction, #SpreadTheGospel, and #BeTheLight emphasize in modern digital evangelism.
