If you don’t say hi back you’re trash!

Get this, you’re in the store walking, browsing and a baby a few months old waves and stares. BUT WAIT the older 2-3 yo says hi and smiles. What do you do? SMILE AND SAY HI! Not hard right? WRONG. This exact thing happened to me! I smiled said hi and the mom and dad said they were surprised as the kid is usually very shy. Well then I go on my way. I see another kid maybe 4 waving at everyone. PEOPLE ARE OF IGNORING HIM. I don’t mean oh they didn’t see or were on the phone. I mean one lady straight rolled eyes and ignored. Why go out of your way to ignore them? YOUR RUDE, no excuse IDC.

... Read moreEngaging with children when they say hi is more than just good manners—it helps build their confidence and fosters a positive social environment. When a child waves or smiles at you, responding warmly shows that you acknowledge their effort to connect, which can be incredibly encouraging for shy or developing kids. Ignoring children who greet you, as highlighted by the phrase "IF A CHILD SAYS HI TO you AND you IGNORE THEM you' RE TRASH!", sends a discouraging message and may negatively impact their willingness to socialize in the future. Studies on child development emphasize the importance of positive social reinforcement, where small gestures like a returned smile or wave contribute greatly to a child’s emotional growth. This matter transcends mere politeness—it reflects our shared responsibility to nurture kindness in our communities. When adults make the effort to respond kindly, it models respectful behavior for everyone present, including other adults and children. Neglecting to do so can seem dismissive or rude, as noted by the experience in the store where one lady reportedly rolled her eyes when a child waved, illustrating a lack of empathy. In busy or distracting moments, it’s understandable that some adults might miss a child’s greeting, but going out of one’s way to completely ignore a waving child could be perceived as disrespectful. Practicing small acts of kindness, especially toward children, helps create a friendlier atmosphere wherever you go. So next time a toddler or preschooler says hi, don’t just smile—say hi back. You’re not only acknowledging their bravery to reach out but also contributing positively to their social development and to the wider culture of kindness in your community.

I agree! I love when babies smile and wave 😍 I can’t imagine not waving back and smiling at them!
