Feeding the kittens

2025/2/1 Edited to

... Read moreWhen I first brought my little furballs home, I was completely overwhelmed with how to feed them properly. It felt like I had a million questions: How often should they eat? When can they have wet food? Are they gaining enough weight? Over time, and with lots of research and vet visits, I've learned so much, and I want to share my personal experience to help other new kitten parents! How Often Should Kittens Eat? This was one of my biggest concerns! Kittens, especially young ones, have tiny tummies and need to eat very frequently. Newborns (0-4 weeks): If you're caring for orphaned kittens, they need to be bottle-fed kitten milk replacer every 2-3 hours, even through the night! It's a huge commitment, but so rewarding. Young Kittens (4-8 weeks): As they start to wean, you can gradually introduce gruel (wet food mixed with milk replacer). At this stage, they'll still need 4-5 meals a day. I found setting a schedule really helped me keep track and ensure they were getting enough. Older Kittens (8 weeks to 6 months): Once fully weaned, they can eat 3-4 meals a day. Free-feeding dry kibble can work for some, but I preferred scheduled meals to monitor their intake and ensure they weren't overeating. High-quality kitten food is key here. When Do Kittens Start Eating Wet Food? This is an exciting milestone! My vet advised starting around 3-4 weeks of age. Start with Gruel: Mix a small amount of high-quality kitten wet food with kitten milk replacer or warm water until it forms a soupy consistency. Offer it on a flat saucer, not a bowl, so they don't have to stick their whole face in. Gradual Transition: Over the next few weeks, gradually reduce the amount of liquid you add, making the mixture thicker. By 6-8 weeks, most kittens should be happily eating wet food on its own. I always made sure the wet food was specifically formulated for kittens, as it has the right balance of nutrients for their rapid growth. How to Help Your Kitten Gain Healthy Weight Sometimes, despite your best efforts, a kitten might seem a bit too slender. I've had a few runts in my litters, and these tips really helped: Frequent, High-Calorie Meals: Offer smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day. Kitten-specific wet food is usually higher in calories and moisture than dry kibble, making it excellent for weight gain. Quality Over Quantity: Ensure you're feeding a high-quality kitten food. Look for brands with real meat as the first ingredient and avoid fillers. Supplementation (Vet Approved!): If a kitten is struggling, your vet might recommend a calorie-dense supplement paste. Never give human supplements or foods without consulting your vet first! I learned this the hard way – always check with a professional. Warm Food: Gently warming wet food can make it more appealing and aromatic, encouraging picky eaters to eat more. Just make sure it's not too hot! Reduce Stress: A quiet, safe eating environment can make a big difference. If they're competing with other kittens, ensure each one gets a fair share. Regular Vet Check-ups: This is crucial! Persistent lack of weight gain can indicate underlying health issues like parasites or other medical conditions. My vet caught a mild case of worms in one of my kittens early on, which was easily treated and helped him start gaining weight rapidly. Other Important Feeding Tips: Fresh Water: Always provide fresh, clean water in a shallow bowl. Hydration is just as important as food. Cleanliness: Wash food bowls after every meal to prevent bacteria growth. Monitor Intake: Pay attention to how much your kitten is eating and drinking. Any sudden changes can be a sign to watch out for. Patience is Key: Every kitten is different. Some will take to new foods quickly, while others need more time and encouragement. Caring for kittens is a journey of love and learning. By following these guidelines based on my own experiences, you'll be well on your way to raising healthy, happy, and well-fed feline friends!

Bottle feeding kittens
We live on a farm so we have barn cats to keep the mouse/rodent population down. Every few years we have a momma cat that has kittens and turns out to be a horrible mother or disappears due to coyotes. So we end up with orphaned kittens. I have learned to always keep supplies in hand. He

Simple Toddler Feeding Schedule: How Much They Eat
Not sure how often to feed your toddler? Although your toddlers stomach is smaller than an adults, they still need to eat something typically every 2-3 hours. Three small meals a day and two healthy snacks should be enough. But consistency is key, try to follow around the same meal and snack sc

My Thoughts on Free Feeding
Free feeding is only acceptable for growing kittens (age 1 year and below). During their first year, kittens grow rapidly and it’s basically impossible for them to overeat. They require more calories than the average cat, which is why free feeding is recommended to keep up with their appetites.
