Every new mom needs to know this before feeding their baby 🥰

2 days agoEdited to

... Read moreAs a new mom navigating the exciting yet challenging phase of introducing solid foods to your baby, I found that following the latest research can make a huge difference in feeding success and peace of mind. One major shift from traditional advice is to start solids not with fruits or avocado, but with iron-rich foods like beef, lentils, beans, egg yolk, and fish. This is critical because breastmilk alone does not supply enough iron or vitamin K after 6 months, and iron is vital for your baby’s brain development. I also learned that introducing common allergens early—around 6 months—can significantly reduce your child’s risk of developing allergies later on. Foods like peanuts, eggs, fish, dairy, wheat, and soy can be safely introduced when done gradually and thoughtfully. Texture variety is another important point. Contrary to the old practice of sticking to smooth purees, babies’ gums become strong enough by 8-9 months to handle more textured foods. This helps them practice chewing and supports oral development. An aspect that resonated with my experience is allowing babies to self-feed starting at 6 months. This encourages a positive relationship with food and independence. It’s normal for babies to need multiple tries—sometimes 10 to 15—before accepting new foods, so persistence without pressure is essential. Also, including water with meals from 6 months onwards helps prevent constipation and aids swallowing thicker foods. Lastly, rotating a wide variety of foods—up to 75 different types by the time your baby reaches 1 year—can help avoid picky eating down the line. Tracking the foods and allergens tried using apps recommended by pediatricians offers practical peace of mind and helps monitor any reactions. In summary, embracing these updated guidelines has been both empowering and beneficial in raising a healthy eater with minimal fuss. If you’re a new mom starting solids, this evidence-based approach can make feeding time less stressful and more enjoyable for you and your baby.
