Okra Soup - Simple, Rich, Perfect 🍲
Okra Soup — Simple, Rich, Perfect 🍲
Just a solid bowl of okra soup made my way. I didn’t have iru (locust beans) - so that's missing, but still tasted great. Also, since I wanted my okra to draw some more, I add ogbono. I like to pair mine with pounded yam or gari(eba) - this time I went with Ola Ola Iyan(pounded yam)

I recently tried making okra soup following a similar approach, and I found that even without iru (locust beans), the flavor was still deeply satisfying. Adding ogbono not only thickened the soup nicely but also gave it a unique, slightly nutty flavor that enhanced the overall richness. This step is great if you want a heartier texture or to experiment beyond traditional recipes. When pairing okra soup with swallows, I prefer pounded yam because it complements the smooth, slippery texture of the soup, making each bite balanced and comforting. Gari (eba) works well too, especially when you want a slightly grainier contrast. I also recommend trying amala or fufu for different textures and tastes, which can bring variety to this classic dish. Cooking okra soup at home is quite flexible—you can adjust ingredients based on what you have. For instance, if you can find fresh okra, it's best to slice it thinly for a better draw (slimy texture), but frozen okra can work as a convenient alternative. Avoid overcooking the okra to prevent it from becoming too slimy or mushy. Overall, okra soup is comforting, nutritious, and versatile. It’s a wonderful meal to share with family or enjoy on a cozy day. If you’re new to Nigerian cuisine, this is a perfect place to start exploring traditional flavors with simple ingredients and minimal fuss.
