Why you’re stuck in therapy ⬇️

I’ve always been a firm believer that talking about our problems will only get us so far. I find that most people who come to therapy and are already incredibly self-aware and really what they need help with is:

-Actually engaging in the things that they’ve been avoiding.

-Help with procrastination.

-Guidance on things they’re scared of.

🤍If you’ve been in therapy and you feel like you’re not sure if you’re making the progress you’d like to see, a behavioral approach might be beneficial.✨

##exposure##phobias##fears##therapytips##therapysessions

1/24 Edited to

... Read moreFrom personal experience and working with many clients, I've noticed that the main barrier to progress in therapy often isn't understanding one's own emotions but taking concrete actions despite fear or hesitation. Traditional talk therapy provides valuable insights but can sometimes leave people stuck in cycles of rumination or avoidance. One highly effective method I've found involves incorporating behavioral strategies, especially for those dealing with anxiety-related disorders like GAD, OCD, or phobias. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a research-backed approach that focuses on gradually facing feared situations or thoughts without engaging in avoidance or safety behaviors. For instance, rather than just discussing a phobia, ERP encourages you to intentionally expose yourself to the feared stimulus in a controlled and supportive way. This repeated and safe exposure helps retrain the brain, showing that the fear can be tolerated and often diminishes over time. In my clinical work, clients often describe therapy sessions as 'personal training for the mind,' where the emphasis is on practice and doing rather than just talking. Another common hurdle is procrastination. Avoiding difficult emotions or tasks may feel comforting short-term but tends to reinforce anxiety or feelings of helplessness. Behavioral strategies target this by breaking down overwhelming goals into smaller, manageable steps that encourage action even when motivation is low. Integrating these methods requires patience, commitment, and a willingness to embrace discomfort, but the payoff is significant progress and a greater sense of control over anxiety or fear. If you find yourself stuck in therapy, consider discussing with your therapist how a behavioral approach might complement your current work and help translate self-awareness into meaningful change.
