Why I chose to quit my high paying corporate job

I think it’s common nowadays to say “I want to quit my job”, or when our friends complain about our jobs we’ll say “just quit”knowing that we all would just head back to work Monday morning. I was exactly like that, but now I can actually say I did quit HAHA.

My story:

I was in the tech consultancy industry. The pay was decent, benefits were good. I think it’s no secret that this industry has the reputation of OT & terrible work life balance. (Any industry that tells you “work hard, play hard” is probably one with poor work life balance)

I was one of those “I don’t have to love my job, but I love the life it pays for” kind of person. I was a “looking forward to the next trip kind of person”. So I was alright with this job.

Disaster hit when on a Monday morning I was rushed to the hospital after a fainting episode. I hit my head & lost parts of my memory. Upon being hospitalised & being poke & prodded for over 2 weeks, the doctors concluded that there was thankfully not major issues or physical trauma.

During that 2 excruciating weeks, I was actually so concerned for my health & well-being. I count myself a fairly healthy & fit person. I do eat balanced meals drink 3L of water a day & go to the gym 3-4 times a week. None of that mattered though, I could have hit my head & that could have been the end.

Upon reflection, I decided I did not want to wait to live life. I did not want to spend more time at work than doing the things I love. I did not want to just look forward to the trips & leaves I can take. I want to be happy & fulfilled in my everyday life.

We only get one life & one body, I want to take care of mine so I can live life to the fullest. I never really fully liked the job, but this was the crazy push I needed to tender my resignation, so I can focus on myself & my health again.

If I didn’t get the hospital scare, I honestly doubt I would probably just power through. So in a way, I am thankful for what has happened.

What’s next for me? For once in my life, I am uncertain, but I am excited to restart my life.
