3 Essential Tubes Every ER Nurse Should Know
Although you often hear “draw a rainbow” (which means fill up all tubes) In the ER, time is everything. Knowing which tubes to draw helps me as a nurse get the right tests done quickly and efficiently.
These 3 are my top go to when starting a line and orders are not in yet for the patient from the doctor
Each tube tests for different things & it’s important to know which is which as a nurse.
•Light green top/ lime green:
This checks patient’s blood sugar, electrolytes, cholesterol, and liver enzymes
•Blue top:
This one checks for any clots that the patient might have!
•Lavender top:
checks for any infections or if you need blood!
Knowing what these test for, always helps the patient ease their nerves and set expectations for them. Make sure to always label your tubes and verify the patients full name and date of birth.

In emergency medicine, swift decision-making can profoundly impact patient outcomes. Understanding which blood test tubes, specifically the light green, blue, and lavender tops, to use when establishing IV lines without doctor orders is crucial. The light green tube is primarily utilized for assessing blood sugar levels, electrolytes, cholesterol, and liver enzymes, which are vital indicators of a patient's metabolic state. The blue tube plays a significant role in coagulation testing, particularly for identifying blood clots, which can be critical in acute situations where time is of the essence. Lastly, the lavender tube is essential for complete blood counts and checking for infections, a common concern among ER patients. Utilizing these tubes effectively not only streamlines the testing process but also reassures patients by clarifying what each test entails, therefore reducing their anxiety. Don't forget the importance of correct labeling and verifying patient information; it's a small yet vital step in maintaining the integrity of emergency care.
