Having another job during Residency 👩🏻‍⚕️

Often resident doctors struggle with the amount they work : the amount of money they make. A lot of resident physicians have other income methods- one of that is being a content creator ( like me!) Can you do it? Yes.

Is it easy? Absolutely not. I frequently feel the toll it takes to be working two + full time jobs, but you can make it happen if it is something you are truly excited and passionate about. Do you NEED to do it? No !

... Read moreOkay, so the main article touched on being a content creator as a resident, and trust me, it’s a valid path – but it’s definitely not for everyone, and it takes serious dedication! Like the image asks, "Can you be a Resident Doctor AND Content creator?? Yes... if you want to!?" But what if content creation isn't your thing, or you're looking for other ways to ease that financial strain during residency? We all know the feeling of working endless hours for pay that sometimes feels... less than ideal, especially with student loans looming. From my perspective, finding a side hustle during residency isn't just about making extra cash; it's about gaining a bit more financial freedom, building different skill sets, and sometimes, even preserving your mental health by having a creative outlet or a way to feel more in control of your finances. "Will it be easy? Heck no 😂," as another image put it, but with careful planning and smart choices, tackling these challenges is absolutely achievable. Here are a few other avenues I've explored or seen my fellow residents successfully pursue for extra income, beyond just being a content creator: Medical Tutoring/Mentoring: This is a classic for a reason. If you excelled in certain subjects or aced your USMLEs, offering tutoring to medical students or even pre-meds can be incredibly rewarding and pays well. Platforms exist for this, or you can find clients through your university network. It leverages your core knowledge without requiring a completely new skill set. Freelance Medical Writing/Editing: Many Resident Doctors have excellent writing skills honed through research papers and presentations. Companies often look for physicians to write articles, review medical content, or edit scientific manuscripts. This can often be done remotely and on a flexible schedule, fitting into those unpredictable residency hours. Telemedicine Consults (Carefully!): This is a trickier one and highly dependent on your program's policies, your state's licensing, and your level of training. However, some residents, especially in later years, might find opportunities for supervised telemedicine work. Always, always clear this with your program director and ensure it doesn't violate any contractual obligations or accreditation rules. The key here is transparency and compliance. Academic/Research Assistant: Sometimes, opportunities arise within your own institution to assist with research projects or teach introductory courses to junior students. These can be great for networking and adding to your CV, alongside the financial benefit. It's often a great way to stay connected to academic pursuits. Medical Survey Participation: While not a consistent income, participating in paid medical surveys or market research panels can add up. Several platforms specifically target healthcare professionals for their insights. It's usually low effort for decent compensation per survey and can be done during short breaks. The key to successfully "balancing roles" and making any of these work is ruthless time management, self-care, and setting realistic expectations. You're already working what feels like two full-time jobs, so adding a third means protecting your sleep and well-being becomes even more critical. Prioritize what matters most, be it patient care, your learning, or your personal life. Don't be afraid to say no if a side hustle starts to push you towards burnout. The goal is to enhance your life, not diminish it. Remember, any external employment often requires approval from your residency program. Always check your contract and speak with your program director or chief resident before committing to anything. Transparency is crucial to avoid any future issues. Ultimately, whether it's content creation or another side gig, finding something you're passionate about that also provides financial relief can make the demanding journey of residency a little more sustainable and, dare I say, sometimes even enjoyable!
