What Is Accession? A Simple Bible Study Guide to Understanding Biblical passage

If you’ve ever read the Old Testament and wondered what the word accession means, you’re not alone. It’s actually a simple word that can help make Bible timelines much easier to understand.

In the Bible, accession is the time when a king officially begins his reign. You’ll often see verses that say things like, “In the first year of King…” or “He began to reign…” That’s talking about the king’s accession.

Why does this matter?

👑 It helps us understand when events happened.

📖 It makes it easier to follow the history of Israel and Judah.

🗓️ Many Bible events are dated by the year a king began to reign.

✝️ It reminds us that while earthly kings come and go, Jesus is the everlasting King whose kingdom will never end.

When you understand accession, reading books like Kings, Chronicles, Jeremiah, Isaiah and Ezekiel becomes much easier because you can follow the timeline with more confidence.

Did you already know what accession meant, or is this a new Bible study word for you? Let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear from you. 👇

All of the information in this post comes from the Bible. We don’t lean on our own understanding, and if you’re ever in doubt, always go back to the Bible and read the Scriptures for yourself.

... Read moreUnderstanding the concept of accession opens a new window into biblical history, especially when studying the Old Testament kings. From personal study, grasping the exact moment a king officially begins his reign—the accession—proves incredibly helpful for piecing together the chronological flow of events in books like Kings and Chronicles. When I first encountered the word accession, I was puzzled about how biblical timelines fit together. Verses like “He began to reign” now make more sense because they mark a clear starting point in history. For example, Solomon's accession after David’s death clarifies when his wise reign began, helping us see the transition not just as a story, but as a real historical event. Moreover, accession reveals God's sovereignty amidst earthly powers. Each change in leadership, recorded precisely with accession dates, reminds us that God is ultimately in control of kingdoms rising and falling. This leads to a powerful spiritual insight: while human kings rule temporarily, Jesus Christ is the everlasting King whose kingdom endures forever, fulfilling Isaiah's prophecy about an eternal reign. Additionally, knowing accession enhances your ability to follow complex biblical narratives and prophetic writings. Kings like Hezekiah and Josiah are introduced by their accession dates, which anchor major reforms and events in Judah’s history. This chronology makes reading historical and prophetic books more coherent and meaningful. I highly encourage anyone studying the Bible to include accession in their theology toolkit. It not only enriches your understanding of scripture but also helps align biblical events with world history. The practice of tracking accession has deepened my appreciation for God’s careful orchestration throughout time and strengthened my faith that His eternal kingdom will never end.
