Getting to know More about Me !

Canvas & Blu

“Art in its truest hue.”

🎨 I’ve been self-teaching myself how to draw for the past 2.5 years, and just last year, I decided to challenge myself with faces 👀🖌️ — and let’s just say… I think I’m getting pretty good! 👏🏾💙

This journey has been all about growth, patience, and exploring new sides of my creativity. Maybe soon I’ll start picking random followers to sketch — just to stay inspired and keep leveling up.

... Read moreHey everyone, it's Beetlegurl again! You know, when I first decided to dive into drawing faces, it felt like such a huge leap. I'd been sketching for a while, but capturing the subtle nuances of a human face is a whole different ball game. It wasn't just about getting the proportions right – though that's a big part of it! – but also about conveying emotion, character, and life through lines and shading. One of the biggest challenges when you're just self teaching myself how to draw faces is not having a formal teacher to guide you. There's no one to tell you directly, 'Hey, your eyes are a bit too far apart,' or 'Try adding more shadow here for depth.' It's a lot of trial and error, staring at reference photos, and constantly comparing your work to what you see. I've spent countless hours watching tutorials online, pouring over art books, and even just observing people's faces in everyday life. Every wrinkle, every curve, every highlight tells a story, and my goal is to learn how to translate that onto paper. I remember one particular struggle early on was getting the symmetry right. Faces are rarely perfectly symmetrical, but there's an underlying balance that needs to be captured. I found that flipping my canvas (or looking at my drawing in a mirror) was a game-changer! It immediately highlights inconsistencies you might not notice when you're immersed in the drawing. Another tip I picked up was to start with basic shapes – circles for the skull, lines for the jaw and center of the face – before getting into the details. This foundational structure really helps in placing features correctly. My toolkit isn't overly fancy. I mostly use graphite pencils of varying hardness, from a soft 6B for dark shadows to a hard 2H for light guidelines. Good quality paper makes a huge difference too – something with a bit of tooth but not too textured. And of course, a reliable eraser! I've learned that erasing isn't a sign of failure; it's part of the process of refining and improving. What inspires me to keep drawing faces? It's the unique story each face holds. I love trying to capture a particular expression – a thoughtful gaze, a joyful smile, or a moment of contemplation. Sometimes I draw from photos, other times I try to imagine a character. The idea of picking random followers to sketch isn't just a fun challenge for me; it's also a way to connect with the incredible community here on Lemon8 and get inspired by real people and their diverse looks. It pushes me out of my comfort zone and helps me practice drawing a wider range of features and expressions. Being a self-taught artist means a continuous journey of learning and growth. There are days when I feel like I'm making huge strides, and days when I feel like I'm stuck. But honestly, it's the process itself, the small victories, and the joy of seeing a face come to life on paper that keeps me going. If you're thinking about starting your own art journey, especially with something as intricate as faces, my biggest advice is just to start. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, embrace the learning curve, and most importantly, enjoy the process. Every line you draw is a step forward!
