My first time making strawberry puree, and it was a good first attempt!
I just took a recipe I saw online and did my lazy version / with limited ingredients.
I took about 2 cups of strawberries and 2 heaping tablespoons of brown sugar in my small pot. I let it simmer for about 10 minutes on medium heat! As it was cooking, I was smashing my strawberries. It turned into a jam like consistency… then I let it cool!
It’s delicious ! But for next time after it’s cooked I’m gonna put it in my blender, just so it’s easier to drink with my straw. Although it would be great in a food recipe! I can’t wait to make it again.🍓
... Read moreHey everyone! So glad you're looking into making your own strawberry puree – it's truly a game-changer for so many delicious treats. My first attempt was surprisingly easy, and I learned a few things along the way that I think will help you perfect yours too!
First off, choosing your strawberries makes a big difference. While fresh, ripe strawberries are ideal for the best flavor, don't hesitate to use frozen ones if they're what you have on hand. Just thaw them slightly before cooking. For my batch, I went with about two cups, but you can easily scale this recipe up or down depending on how much puree you need.
Regarding sweeteners, I used brown sugar, which gives a lovely caramel note, but white granulated sugar works perfectly fine too. You could even try a touch of maple syrup or honey for a different flavor profile, especially if you're aiming for a more 'natural' taste. Start with a couple of tablespoons and taste as you go – you can always add more if your strawberries are tart! Some people even skip sugar entirely if their strawberries are super sweet.
The cooking process is pretty straightforward. Simmering the strawberries in a saucepan over medium heat for about 10 minutes, as I did, allows them to break down beautifully. Make sure to keep mashing them as they soften; this really helps release their juices and create that rich, jam-like consistency. If you prefer a thinner puree, you can add a tablespoon or two of water or orange juice during simmering.
Now, about that texture! My first batch was a bit jammy, which is fantastic for spreading on toast or swirling into yogurt. But if you're like me and planning to use it in drinks, especially for those beautiful layered beverages like a strawberry matcha latte, blending is key. Once your puree has cooled down a bit, transfer it to a blender or use an immersion blender right in the saucepan. Blend until it's as smooth as you like. For an extra-fine texture, you can even push it through a fine-mesh sieve, but I usually find blending enough for a homemade feel. This will make it much easier to enjoy with a straw, just as I plan to do next time!
The versatility of homemade strawberry puree is incredible. Beyond making delicious drinks, think about swirling it into your morning oatmeal, topping pancakes or waffles, mixing it into plain Greek yogurt for a healthy snack, or even creating a vibrant coulis for cheesecakes and ice cream. I've also heard of people using it in salad dressings for a sweet and tangy kick!
Finally, storage. Once cooled, your fresh strawberry puree can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 5-7 days. For longer storage, you can freeze it! Pour it into ice cube trays, freeze until solid, then transfer the cubes to a freezer-safe bag. This way, you'll have perfectly portioned strawberry goodness ready whenever you need it – great for spontaneous drink making or adding a burst of flavor to your recipes year-round. Enjoy making your next batch!
