What will happen if I skip my medical bill?

Let me vent, so my finger got bit by a mosquito, it swelled up so bad my ring was STUCK tight! It was 10om, so I rushed to the ER, waited 30 whole minutes just for staff to ask the same questions on repeat then the doctor showed up, grabbed a tiny saw, and popped that ring off in LESS THAN 2 MINUTES 😳

Next day, a $1,000 bill hits my inbox. Are you kidding me?! My insurance covered half, but I’m still stuck with $500 for TWO MINUTES of work! That’s totally absurd, how is that even legal? I refuse to pay for something this overpriced, but I don’t know how to fight it.

Has anyone negotiated a crazy ER bill down? Any hacks to get fees waived? Should I call the hospital and argue? Or is there a trick I’m missing? Spill your tips. I’m desperate! 🙏

First, ask for an itemized bill. Seriously. A lot of hospitals will reduce the cost when you ask for that because they know they aren’t being reasonable with that they charge. Then look at that bill and look at the actual cost of what is mentioned. If it is lower (the actual cost, and it likely will be) you can escalate in the billing department with that information. You might not win, but you can’t win if you don’t try
