What Does it Take to Apply to Medical School?

Applying to medical school is a long process, but it can be broken up into five steps!

1. The first thing you need to do is obtain your bachelors degree. It doesn’t matter what major but there are prerequisite classes that many med schools require. As you complete your bachelors be sure to research the med schools you’re interested in applying to and find out what prerequisite classes they require.

2. Next, you’ll need to take the medical college admissions test. You’ll want to try and do well on this exam as different schools have different average MCAT scores.

3. Primary applications are a single applications that gets sent out to any med school. You’d like to apply to. Two main systems that process these applications are AMCAS and TMDAS. The application that you submit will be sent to the med school of your choosing and after screening med school may invite you to complete a secondary application.

4. Secondary applications are school specific applications that have questions and essays tailored to the missions and values of individual schools. These are invite only and each school has a different screening process to select applicants to fill out secondary applications.

5. After submitting a stellar secondary application, you might be invited to interview. Schools use interviews to get to know applicants and select the people that they want to be a part of their incoming class.

In addition to academic achievements, it is important to cultivate strong letters of recommendation. Engaging in extracurricular activities, such as volunteering in healthcare settings or participating in relevant research, can significantly enhance your application. These experiences not only strengthen your understanding of the medical field but also help develop skills essential for a successful career in medicine, such as leadership and teamwork. Moreover, familiarize yourself with the specifics of the medical schools you wish to apply to. Each institution has unique values and missions that might influence their selection criteria. Tailoring your secondary applications to reflect an understanding of these elements can make a positive impression on admissions committees. Interviews are also a key component of the application process; preparing thoroughly for potential questions and showcasing your passion for medicine can further bolster your candidacy. Remember that persistence and thorough preparation are essential in navigating this competitive journey.
