How I survive Summer as a Redhead

Pale skin? Red hair? Struggle with heat?

Here are my summer tips!

1. SUNSCREEN. Gurl, the way I keep sunscreen everywhere I linger is insane but a necessity. I burn no matter what. So it’s a daily routine for me. Try CeraVe tinted sunscreen, it changed my life!

2. SHADE. I don’t stand in the sun for long at all. A few minutes max. Redheads are sensitive to too much sun. Our skin just can’t handle the rays. Umbrellas, pop up tents, trees, indoors: all my friends.

3. WATER. Because we cook so easily, we also get dehydrated far too easily. I always have some sort of drink on hand.

4.LOTION. Take care of that dried out, sweaty skin. Bathe regularly and use moisturizer. Same goes for your hair! Condition lots.

This is pretty much my life for the summer 🤣 but hey! Fall is coming šŸ˜šŸ‘»

... Read moreOkay, fellow redheads, you know the struggle is real when summer hits! My initial post gave you the basics, but trust me, after years of trial and error with my pale skin and ginger hair, I've got a few more tricks up my sleeve to truly thrive, not just survive, the sunny season. First off, let's talk sunscreen application because it's paramount for us with sensitive pale skin. While CeraVe tinted is a dream, it's not just about what you use, but how you use it. I've learned to apply sunscreen like it's my second skin – and I mean everywhere! Don't forget your ears, the back of your neck, and even the tops of your feet if they're exposed. My biggest revelation? Reapplication! I set a timer on my phone for every two hours, especially if I'm outdoors or sweating. A quick tap-on stick sunscreen is a godsend for touch-ups over makeup without ruining it. Trust me, that little extra effort saves you from a painful burn later. Then there's the specific challenge of protecting our vibrant red hair from sun and heat damage. My ginger locks used to fade so fast in the summer, turning brassy and dry. Now, I always wear a wide-brimmed hat when I know I'll be in direct sun for more than a few minutes – it's a stylish accessory and a hair savior! I also swear by UV-protectant hair sprays. Just a few spritzes before heading out can make a huge difference in preventing color fade and dryness. And when it comes to conditioning, I don't just 'condition lots'; I use a weekly deep conditioning mask specifically formulated for color-treated or damaged hair. It helps lock in moisture and keeps my red hair looking glossy, not fried. Beyond the shade of an umbrella, let's consider our summer wardrobe for maximum protection. Lightweight, long-sleeved linen shirts are my best friends. They're breathable but offer excellent sun protection. Look for clothing with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) ratings – you'll be surprised how many stylish options are out there now. And sunglasses aren't just for fashion; they protect those light eyes many redheads have, which can be more sensitive to bright light. Staying hydrated is crucial, but I've found some fun ways to do it. Beyond plain water, I love infusing my water with cucumber and mint for a refreshing twist. Electrolyte packets are also a lifesaver after a sweaty outdoor activity – they help replenish what you lose faster than just water alone. And don't underestimate the power of cooling towels or a small portable fan; sometimes a quick cool-down can prevent you from overheating. Finally, even with all these precautions, sometimes our pale skin just gets a bit too much sun. For those days, a good after-sun routine is essential. I keep aloe vera gel in the fridge for an extra cooling effect. And a soothing, fragrance-free moisturizer helps calm any redness or irritation. Remember, taking care of your skin after sun exposure is just as important as protecting it *during*.
