Cognitive distortions

7/20 Edited to

... Read moreIn my journey toward better mental health, recognizing cognitive distortions has been incredibly eye-opening. These distortions—like all-or-nothing thinking or labeling—often sneak into our minds as automatic responses meant to protect us, but instead they limit our perspective and cause unnecessary distress. One powerful approach I've found is to actively notice when my mind jumps to negative conclusions or magnifies problems. For example, instead of believing "This always happens to me," I pause and ask myself what evidence actually supports or contradicts that thought. This practice helps break the cycle of overgeneralization. Also, I try to practice self-compassion when I catch myself using 'should' statements or labeling myself negatively. Rather than harshly judging, I remind myself that feelings are not facts and that everyone makes mistakes and faces setbacks. Another helpful tip is zooming out to gain perspective. Asking whether a problem will matter in a week or a year often softens its immediate impact. Acknowledging progress rather than striving for perfection keeps me motivated and reduces feelings of failure. Remember, cognitive distortions can be challenged and reframed with curiosity and patience. By gradually replacing unhelpful thoughts with more balanced perspectives, we create space for personal growth and healthier emotional responses. This process isn’t about ignoring problems but about seeing the full picture and choosing thoughts that support wellbeing.
